How do I make sure my emails to people don't end up in their spam folder?

I work as freelance writer and use Gmail to reach potential sources. I don’t spam, and I always send messages out to one person at a time. But lately I’ve been getting late responses from people who tell me my message was in their spam folder. Is there anyway to fix this?
