Two weeks after job interview: should I call?

Asked by jordym84 (4752points) November 8th, 2012

I had a job interview 2 weeks ago and I’m getting really antsy waiting to find out whether I got the job. When I submitted my application, I got a call for a preliminary phone interview within just a few days of submitting it. The interview went really well and on the following day they called me back for an in-person interview for the next day. That, too, went really well and the hiring manager seemed really impressed with my resume and interviewing skills and told me that I definitely had the experience and personality for the job. At the end of the interview I asked her when I should expect to hear back from her and she said within 1 to 2 weeks. As soon as I got home I sent her a thank-you email.

Yesterday was the 2-week mark since the interview and I still haven’t heard a word. I really want to call her to check in and make sure she still remembers me, but I don’t want to seem too pushy. Should I give her a few more days or should I call today? If so, what should I say so as not to sound pushy and impatient?

Thanks in advance!

I have called before.
“Hello, this is Jordym84 and I was calling to see if the position for CEO that I interviewed for on Nov. 1 has been filled yet?”
You will get one of two answers. Yes, we have filled that position, which will let you move on and stop thinking about the job. Or no, we have not made a decision yet, in which you can say “I am still very interested in the position.”
Trust me, they are not going to let dead air hang at that point. They will say something back to you and you take your cue from what they are saying.

@chyna Thank you! I called her but got her voicemail, so I left a message. If she doesn’t call me back by, say, Monday or Tuesday, would it be appropriate to call her again? Or would an e-mail be a better approach?

From what I understand you’re supposed to send a thank you note after the first interview, then call the second week, then call every week thereafter and ‘bug’ them. My mgr says it shows applicants really want the job. I waited 2 months and 3 interviews for mine, been here 8 years now.

Call. Say “I just wanted to let you know that I was still very interested in the position and in working for your company,”

@jordym84 I would call back Tuesday if you don’t hear back by then. I would try back several times if I got her voice mail and not leave a message unless you are going through a secretary who is sending you to the woman’s voicemail. I would not email her unless you can’t talk to her personally next week as you will worry that the email got lost.

I personally wait a bit, as I want to appear hard to get, busy and very much in demand all over town. I would never leave a message, just makes me wonder more, are they ignoring my message, did they get my message so on. I think you did all the right things, now you have to wait it out. But I always keep my tentacles out even when an interview went well. That way in the past, I had a few offers at once.
