Can you play PlayStation2 games on a PlayStation3?

Asked by Magic5678 (174points) November 17th, 2012

I really love the Kingdom Hearts games and have been wanting to play 1 and 2 again, but they’re both for the PS2. My brother recently got a PS3 for his birthday last month and I was wondering if I could play the two Kingdom Hearts games on it.

Depends on the kind of PS3 you have. Check this link: http://us.playstation.com/support/compatiblestatus/index.htm

If you’re ps3 is a version 1 (ie has memory card slots under a flap next to bluray slot) then probably yes. Otherwise no.

To my knowledge, only the first models of the PS3 can play the PS2 games. I’ve tried my PS2 games in my console, which is a 2011, they don’t work.

The older the PS3, the better the chances. The first ones had PS2 hardware integrated into it and the ones after that had software emulation. I guess somewhere along the lines they took that out, also.

From what I recall the very first US and Japanese versions had full hardware emulation. The first euro model and second generation US model had software emulation (but still had hardware modifications necessary to run the emulation). After that there was no official support. Also even the full hardware emulation was a bit hit and miss anyway so if you really want to play ps2 discs then you’re probably better off picking up a secondhand ps2.
