Flat screen TV in the bedroom: Is it better to put it on the wall or on a piece of furniture?

Asked by jca (36062points) November 26th, 2012

I just bought a 40 inch flat screen TV for my bedroom. The current TV is on a kitchen cart-type thing (IKEA), about 34 inches tall, which was why I chose it, so it would make the present TV higher up than regular furniture made for a TV.

Now with the new TV, I can purchase a wall mount and have it swing off the wall, or purchase a dresser to put at the foot of the bed for the TV. IKEA has some inexpensive ones, varying heights, it just has to be wide enough to accomodate the width of the TV.

I think if you need more drawer space why not buy a small dresser and have extra storage? As long as it does not crowd the room. You don’t have a dresser already for the TV? I’m a little confused about that? Maybe not a tall enough dresser? If you are just going tobe buying a piece of furniture that dies not really go with the rest of your decorthen I say mount it on the wall.

I like my TV’s on the wall. For me, floor space is a premium, but I have downsized from a 4000+ square foot house and have had to keep a lot of my furniture in storage.

I believe bedrooms are for sleeping and other forms of recreation. TV belongs in the family room.

Definitely the wall.

Jarnovich’ manual of TV placement says so.~

The wall mounted is safer and give you more room. However, it is too permanent for me. I have mine on a wheeled storage rack. Do not use furniture that can tip over.

If you are renting, check with the landlord before you attach it to the wall. In some states once you permanently attach the furniture or appliances to the wall it becomes the property of the landlord.

Permanently in this case means if you use screws or nails to secure it to the wall.

@WestRiverrat: I rent my house from my parents, so we have a pretty decent spirit of cooperation.
