Does anyone remember the film Shirley Valentine, and it's message?

Asked by Shippy (10015points) December 7th, 2012

It aired in 1989, and at the time was quite a cult hit. Every one had to see it. I was about 26 at the time, and didn’t fully understand it’s message.

It was about a female of 42, gosh she seemed so old to me then! Who left for a holiday in Greece. Leaving behind a bored husband, demanding family and the regular mundane life of a Liverpudlian housewife in the UK. Once there, she tossed off all her learned inhibitions, swam topless, flashed her cellulite, and fell in lust with a charming Greek fisherman. I say lust, as she knew the difference between sex and love.

She decided to never return home! For me the message was, it is never to late to start a new life, it is never too late to fall in lust, appreciate your body or yourself. Life is ever changing and new experiences can bring new rules. Plus we don’t have to return to the place we just left. Male or female the story rings true. Have you ever felt like or actually pulled a Shirley Valentine?

I do remember the movie actually and I am shocked it was in 1989. I do also see the message in it about life and how you can change it at any moment and in a way you never know what is around the corner. I think also it was saying to just go for it if you have the courage to do so, but even on a smaller scale the message still rings true. (I will need to work on doing that part myself I feel)

Yes – I have been thinking about it a lot and wondering if I dare to book a trip to a Greek island…..

@janbb Go for it girl. I learn everyday that life is short. That boundaries are hard to place, that I am entitled to laugh, to love and be loved. To make mistakes, to make a tit of myself. To find new friends, broaden horizons, bonk random fishermen and yes, flash my cellulite.!!

@TheProfoundPorcupine May I inquire as to which part made you faint? “Making a tit of myself” bonking random fishermen or…?

@Shippy the flashing the cellulite (if indeed you do have any) although I am sure that the fishermen would see you as the best catch of the day

I’d bonk Tom Conte any day of the week.

Loved the play and the movie. I never felt the need to totally leave my home, husband and children, but I left to a degree that made me able to take the less desirable things at home in stride. Went away for a week or two now and then.
