What, if anything, do you have in your home that depicts the flag of a nation other than that of your own?

Asked by ucme (50047points) January 5th, 2013

Could be absolutely anything, an item of clothing or a picture hanging from your walls, a souvenir brought back from a trip abroad..anything goes really.

A few things, the most appalling was a wood carved dog, with spindly legs, and curled tail. He was a coffee table. Until one leg broke off and he stood with his ass in the air, then he became an ashtray holder. Finally he broke and became an ornament. He was from a brief trip to Gaborone.

World map, with flags of nations across the bottom margin, hanging on my office wall.

A disply set of coins from Papua New Guinea that shows the flag. My wife grew up there.

A couple of graphic tees with a British flag, a few shot glasses with every country we have ever been to (Spain, Greece, Italy, France, China, Puerto Rico), and hmmm I guess from photos we took when we were over there. That’s from the top of my head anyway

A pin with a USSR flag on it. The Russians handed them out everywhere we went when we visited. I also kept a Pepsi bottle cap which had Pepsi written in Cyrillic.

A big Mexican flag hanging on a wall in my garage. It’s probably 2.5 maybe 3 feet by 5 feet? Not sure of the exact dimensions. MX is my husbands native country. Also, on his race car he has both the American and Mexican flags. I don’t know if those count since he is from there, but we live in America and he is a citizen of America now. I was born and raised in the US. I have tshirts from various countries, but I don’t think there is a flag on any of them, just the name of the city or country.

I also have a world map like @DrBill.

Interesting question. Somewhere I have a pin with crossed American and Canadian flags on it as a sign of international friendship. There’s also a T-shirt with a maple leaf and, uh…I forget, but it isn’t exactly a flag. I haven’t seen it in a while.

I have a souvenir or two with flags of the U.K. on them and at least one with a saltire, the St. Andrew’s cross of Scotland.

I have a jacket that I received while working on a business system implementation team. The team was joint US / Dutch (with some British help), for two plants with common ownership. The plants were located in the US and Netherlands, so that jacket is adorned with crossed US – Netherlands flags.

Really good stuff there guys, cheers for that!
I have the american flag on some jeans & a sweatshirt, that’s just the brand though.
I have a tee-shirt with the rising sun all over the front, only because it’s a cool image.
My son has a poster in his room with the flags of the world on there.
I have an aunt who spends most of her time travelling & walking into her house is like entering the united nations, incredible.

My entire house is a combo plate of ethnic eccentricities and decor.
My living room has Chinese, Japanese, African and Indian decor. Shinto screens, persian rug, ethnic hand drums, african baskets and carvings, asian carvings, and a huge, authentic temple gong strung with Nepalese prayer flags.

Well…not quite true, my bedroom is retro Marsha Brady. lol

RareDenver's avatar

@ucme yes I too have a pair of Ralph Lauren jeans with the US flag on the back, wearing them right now. @Coloma we also have lots of wall hangings and paintings from Thailand, Laos and Cambodia.

I live in the US

I have a number of items from China, Italy, France, England, and Belgium. All places we’ve travelled to.

Interestingly, I don’t think I have anything specifically American in my house. Certainly no American flag.

I must be a commie, pinko, socialist, lefty.

RareDenver's avatar

@cookieman nothing to be ashamed of

Coloma's avatar

@RareDenver Oooh….cut from the same cloth we are. :-)

I have zero americana , well…one antique mahogany buffet that I use for storage.
My neighbors up the hill have a giant barn/workshop with a huge american flag and nostalgia mural painted on it, I’m glad I can’t see it through the trees. haha
Nice artwork but so not my thing.

RareDenver's avatar

@Coloma well the same silk at least

Also have a huge genuine tribal mask from the Sepik Tribe, given to my father in law as a gift from the tribal leader

gondwanalon's avatar

I have the flag of New Caledonia on one of our stereo speakers.

Also the flag of Taiwan pin on one of my baseball caps.

cookieman's avatar

@RareDenver & @Coloma: Yeah, I can appreciate Americana, but I’m just not very drawn to it. I prefer interesting items from other countries.

RareDenver's avatar

@cookieman for me there is nothing tackier than having a Union Jack at home (bit too mod), guess we are drawn to the foreign

ucme's avatar

@RareDenver Tak our me thread why dint ya bonny lad ;)
No union jack for me, although the george flag hangs out the window when the footie world cup comes round, got to show support for the lads like.

We are very multicultural, we have American flag, aussie flag, boxing kangaroo flag (my personal favorite) NT flag, aboriginal flag. Art from all over the world and yes clothing with assorted countries and cultures displayed. I have a t shirt from Singapore with chili mud crab on it, I really like that one. And of course, t shirts and caps from all 4 tennis grand slams. (I am guessing your money is on Murray for the aussie open @ucme? This should be a good chance for him with Rafa out, Djoko not looking good, but of course there is always Roger and the up and comers! We have tickets this year, I am so excited!!!)

CWOTUS's avatar

I just recalled that I have a polo shirt with an Indian flag and an India flag lapel pin that my employer handed out to those of us involved in our various projects in India a couple of years ago.

ucme's avatar

@rooeytoo Hey good for you, i’m so not jealous…much!
Murray has no pressure for once having bagged the us open last time out, so I won’t place any on him by predicting a win, not this time…bound to do well though, class always shines through.

YARNLADY's avatar

I just noticed that one of the Cards I have has a Canada flag on it, and I also have one with a flag of Sweden.

rooeytoo's avatar

@ucme ;-) and oh my goodness, how could I have forgotten, we also have a collection of Collingwood AFL flags too, lots of black and white and magpies fluttering on our back verandah!

I have items with the Swiss flag, because my mother is Swiss, and is a resident alien in the US.

I may have one or two items with the Welsh flag, as my father’s family originated from Wales, but came to the US long before the revolutionary war.

CWOTUS's avatar

Oh, yeah, I guess I have a Swiss army knife in the house somewhere, too. It’s not exactly a Swiss “flag” on the knife, but still close enough, I guess.

tranquilsea's avatar

I have a Union Jack handkerchief and we have a small Norwegian Flag somewhere.

Supacase's avatar

My daughter has a bracelet with the flags of several nations on it. I have a similar tote bag. My daughter also has a leather bookmark with the Mexican flag that her friend brought her back after visiting family there.

wildpotato's avatar

I have a pair of flip flops with the Brazilian flag on them.

@tranquilsea It’s only called the Union Jack when flown at sea; otherwise it’s called the Union Flag thank you, Doctor Who.

bob_'s avatar

A miniature KLM 747, which has the flag of the Netherlands on both sides.

I have two soviet era posters from the Soviet Union. One has the red star in it. The other is a portrait of Lenin. I’m not sure if either has a soviet flag. I don’t think so. In fact, I don’t think I have any flags or flag depictions for a flag of any nation in my home. I’m not fond of flags. I’m not fond of nations.

I do however, have toilet paper from at least ten different nations and coins from that many and more in my coin collection.

I also have artwork and musical instruments from a lot of countries around the world. I have dijeridus, djembes, dumbeks, a shawm, various ocarinas, Indonesian puppets and masks, Chinese masks, and other stuff I’m sure I’ve forgotten about. Do we count a broken frame from a Carlton 10 that I picked up at the factory in England in 1971?

Blondesjon's avatar

‘Tis only the flag of the Fluther nation that flies in me home and that only when me browser deems it compatible.

ucme's avatar

This was a cool thread, devoid of any bullshit or petty debate, very interesting too, I applaud the lot of ya..apart from @Blondesjon coz he’s already got the clap ;¬}
Although it’s a good idea of his though, I wonder what design this fluther flag would take…hmm!

newtscamander's avatar

Actually, I can’t think of anything I have at home that depicts any flag….which amazes me….
But I used to have a drum I made in school, and on the drum head I drew the flag of South Korea.
And also, as a joke, when the European Football Championship was running in 2008, we hung a Brazilian flag on our door.

AngryWhiteMale's avatar

Had a Welsh flag on my ceiling in college; a nod to my ancestral roots. Nothing currently in this place that’s a flag or has a flag on it though, aside from the atlas. :-P
