What is the name of phobia for being scared to use hand sanitizer?

Asked by talljasperman (21916points) January 7th, 2013

I have had to quit a job 15 years ago because I didn’t know what hand santizer was or if it could be toxic, when I prefered normal soap… or if it killed the good germs as well as the bad? What do you think?

I think you’re nuts. lol
I fear NOT using it when in public places like the grocery store, bank, and I am completely disgusted by using others phones and computers. There are no “good” germs on ones hands, or in public places, or swarming on money, which is filthy. haha
The only “good” bacteria that is killed is intestinal flora when taking an antibiotic.

I believe in sharing, I share my germs and don’t mind others germs. Within reason.

Chemophobia is the fear of chemicals.
I don’t blame you.
I won’t use Purell’s hand sanitizer since it only killed 99.9% of germs. It seems much safer to use CVS’ generic hand sanitizer since it kills 99.99% of germs.~~

I think you’re not alone in wanting to avoid hand sanitizer. I don’t know if I would call it a “phobia” however.

There have been many articles written about how hand sanitizers kill of the weak germs while the strong germs remain to multiply. I don’t use hand sanitizers myself. I prefer regular old fashioned soap.

I have a friend who is, in my opinion, paranoid about chemicals. She does not use deodorant, lotion, perfume, etc. She does not clean her house with anything other than soap (detergent) and water. To me, she’s paranoid but that’s a matter of opinion. She’s paranoid about cancer.

I keep one with an alcohol base in the car and use it always after I have pumped gas. The ones that advertise themselves as “alcohol-free” are nasty.

Really? Seriously? Or are you using that as an excuse so you can try to collect disability?

If that was the problem and you really wanted to work, there are so many work-arounds for this. Why couldn’t you use regualr soap? Or simply wear nitrile or latex gloves?
Please don’t tell me that Dewey, Cheetum, and Howe helped you submit your disability claim.

I don’t think there’s probably a name for this specific particular phobia.

Just FYI, the “good bacteria” that you hear talk about, lives in your colon. You don’t need to worry about that with hand sanitizer.

Surely jobs that require it must have a workaround. I am allergic to isopropyl alcohol, so I can’t use hand sanitizer. Barring an allergy though, it truly is not ‘toxic’.

It’s called Notkardamomenphobia. Hand sanitizer, when you’re around sick people and little kids who carry germs, is your friend.
