About how much gas is used on a 95 mile trip?

Asked by JessK (599points) January 18th, 2013

I’m visiting my friend who’s at a different college than me for her senior recital, and I’m carpooling with my friend, her parents, and probably 2 or 3 other people. The college is about 95 miles away and, trying to act mature and the like, I figured I should bring some gas reimbursement money. About how much should I bring?

Figure a low mpg of 20…that’s five gallons times whatever gas costs. Throw in a little extra to be generous.

It is impossible to tell without knowing what mileage the vehicle gets. @gailcalled‘s method seems like a good compromise. I would assume an average gas cost of $3.50 a gallon unless you are on the West Coast of the US in which case i would assume $4.00.

$20 should cover it unless they have a huge SUV. The average car gets around 25mpg, so would use about four gallons on that trip. I’ve been paying close to $4/gallon for a while. That’s ~$16 right there, so round to $20.

I assume it is there and back so round up to a 200 mile trip.
Even at 20mpg that is 10 gallons
$4.00 per gallon makes it $40 total.
Divided by the number of people makes it about $5—$6 per person for just gas.

If you make considerations for wear and tear on the vehicle like they do with standards for Mileage reimbursement of $0.55 per mile, $20 would cover you.
