Movie recommendations?

Asked by Luiveton (4162points) March 5th, 2013

Have you ever been affected so much by a movie?
This question is for me to find out your favorite movies, but they have to be meaningful. I want a movie that has really affected/inspired you in some way.
Something, perhaps, that means a lot to you, whether it shows you reality, makes a point about life, is symbolic, whatever.
So what are a few movies that you consider your personal favorites for a reason?

I recently watched a movie called ‘Biutiful’ starring Javier Bardem. I will never forget this movie. I came out of it feeling like a changed person, I felt so different somehow. So powerful, and Bardem’s acting definitely takes the movie to a whole new level of intense. It inspired me so much that I’m currently writing a paper about it just for the sake of it. It’s indeed beautiful.

I also watched ‘Amadeus’ yesterday, needless to say, it was another perfect movie. The music is so grand and unparalleled to anything you can come across nowadays or any other time for that matter. Mozart was truly a genius. Everything about this movie was beautiful. It took everything in me not to cry and laugh and gasp simultaneously, at some points all you can do is stare in awe. Full of so many beautiful operas.

I gave both movies ratings of 10.
So what is a movie you’d rate similarly with no hesitation?

A movie that moves me every time I watch it (which is at least twice a year) is DODSWORTH. Don’t be put off by its age and staginess. It’s a very old movie, but the acting and script are utterly superb, and the things it has to say about marriage are remarkably modern. I recommend it without hesitation.

“The Sea Inside” with Javier Bardem is another life-changing movie.

Whatever Works (first time I watched it, I watched it again and then again.. yup five times, I think. I’m not sure why, but it kind of changed the way I see life, people, and opportunities).

Home (I don’t think I’d watch this one again, but I liked it so much, the way it shows how people can’t face their problems and almost end up being miserable, but at some point they realize that the solution to their problems was there, but they couldn’t see it at first..)

I just saw recently and was profoundly affected by Perks of Being a Wallflower. It was a great movie! Very enjoyable too.

The Last Emperor is like that. I have a 4 hour version I have been trying to find time to watch.

@Pachyderm_In_The_Room Year of production really doesn’t matter to me, I’ll make sure I watch it. :)

@janbb It’s on my Watchlist!! I definitely plan on seeing it very soon. Javier is definitely an amazing actor.

@marinelife Yep saw it, although I have to say the movie misses out a large portion of the book. Have you read the book? Really nice and a lot of people can relate. Although I can’t blame the director because feelings and concepts in this book are very hard to portray, especially if someone can’t relate in the first place. It’s very beautiful in its own way, some things can be described in words more than anything. The movie doesn’t really focus on Charlie’s emotions and character individually, it just takes the overall plot.

@filmfann Saw it before, very nice too, but to me it wasn’t like that. That’s the best thing about certain movies, they mean different things to different people. I still can’t figure out why the movie ‘Biutiful’ affected me so much but hopefully after writing about it maybe I’ll find out why. You should watch it I think.

@this_velvet_glove I plan on watching Whatever Works, woody allen is one of my fav directors, his movies are so artistic and meaningful. If you haven’t already, watch ‘To rome with love’ and ‘Midnight in paris’. I also plan on watching ‘you will meet a tall dark stranger’ and ‘vicky cristina barcelona’.

It’s all on my watchlist, makes things easier for me haha.

Into the Wild This film touched my heart. It’s a reminder of the importance of family and connections with those you love.

@jonsblond Yep I have that on my watchlist it seems like a nice movie

@Luiveton “Into the Wild” is a very painful movie but very touching.

@Luiveton I didn’t know there was a book. I will look for it.

@marinelife You’ll either love it or hate it, depends on whether you can relate, hopefully you’ll love it though! That’s why many people were advised to watched the movie if they knew they won’t be able to relate to the book because they won’t really like it. I was able to relate in certain ways.

@janbb I’ll watch it, and— if you haven’t, watch Biutiful because it’s also very painful, but has a truth to it. The director is making a point about life. It’s not a movie where you escape reality, you face it.

@Luiveton I’ve watched all of them, they’re some of my favorite movies (big Woody Allen fan here) especially Midnight in Paris and Vicky Christina Barcelona. Also, Match Point and Scoop are both great.

@this_velvet_glove haha I’m especially dying to see Vicky Cristina Barcelona because it has Javier Bardem (obsessed with the guy)

Hear hear @Adirondackwannabe. Remember that scene when Arthur rides with his knights and a song from Carmina Burana plays?

Author Author ( Al Pacino )
Marvin’s Room
A Man and a Woman ( Anouk Aimee )
Departures ( a Japanese film about a cellist )

^^Furthermore, when Uther crossed the dragon’s breath, thanks to the pimp, Merlin, to visit his enemy’s wife disguised as her husband, what followed was one of the hottest medieval movie scenes in the 80’s. Lol.

@Luiveton haha I know, everyone is obsessed with Javier Bardem (and why wouldn’t they?)

I would say that Pink flamingo’s was totally life changing. Honestly I can never look at dog poo the same after viewing this film.
