New cell phone service in Australia- is ACN any good?

Asked by trailsillustrated (16799points) March 21st, 2013

So here I am, home, setting up, I need a new cellphone. My friend, (whom I am sort of dating), is an ACN rep and wants me to buy a cellphone and plan through him. Although it is Optus. I went to the local phone shop and can get all I need there for an ok price. I asked my friend for details and he gave me a card and told me to look at the website, that I would get the phone in about a week. I understand that ACN is some sort of MLM company, which I am fundamentally opposed to, and plus I feel sort of hustled. Anybody know anything about it? supposed to have killer deals?

I base my opinion on coverage. If you venture outside of the major cities, Telstra has the best coverage. There are still a lot of areas that have no coverage at all so if you are going to travel through them a sat phone is the best bet. I have never price shopped because I want the service that works the most places and that is Telstra (at least in my experience).

@rooeytoo oh I am not traveling I’m just staying here but I went to the local phone shop and they could give me what I wanted at close to was I was paying in the us. Could I ask you what you pay without being rude? My goal : $50 per month unlimited text, talk internet or close to

I am paying 79 per month for my phone and my wireless usb modem. The phone has unlimited texting and a substantial amount of free calls before I am charged for them. It also includes a couple of gig of data for the phone. It seems like a pretty good deal because the usb modem alone was 29 per month. That was on a 2 year contract which will be over in May so I don’t know if that rate has changed in the meantime or not. We changed to Telstra when we lived in the NT and no one else had any covereage outside of Darwin or the Alice. It is better in Vic but Telstra still has the best coverage no matter where you are. But if you are not concerned with out of town service then I am sure you could find cheaper. Seems as if a lot of the kids use Dodo. Welcome home!

I’m with vodaphone who keep adding towers so overtime the coverage has improved a lot. I find Telstra way too pricey but as @rooeytoo says coverage! We also have Optus which is good too but more expensive I ay $69 a month and get 2 gig ( not much but I get by) and unlimited text and talk, it also includes the phone iPhone payments for two years. It’s a deal they no longer offer as I think they lose a lot of money on the unlimited phone calls. Outside Telstra, Optus and vodaphone the other providers are on sellers of Telstra or Optus
