Are the Aesir, Vanir, and Jotunn all aware of their fates or only some of them?

Asked by Ajoiner (161points) March 22nd, 2013

I’ve heard that the Norse gods are aware of their fates (specifically their role in Ragnarök) and are unable to prevent or alter them. I’m not well versed in the subject and am hoping for some clarification.

Wikipedia usually has articles that are very informative: here is one of them:

@starsofeight That link isn’t working for me, but this should lead to the Wikipedia article on the Vanir War. Also their discussion of Ragnarök is useful and relatively complete.

Supposedly Wotan became very depressed after learning it. Though, if you want to apply a little deconstruction to it, the answer is they probably all knew, since…well, we do, and they’re gods.

In any case, most of the surviving records of these beliefs are Christian. I’ve read that the ancient Romans maybe encountered them on the frontiers of Germany, but I don’t think there are any records kept in depth. So who knows what the hell they really believed?
