Before selling my MacBook Pro on Craigslist what should I delete?

Asked by pleiades (6617points) March 28th, 2013

I’ve noticed a lot of notebook laptops are decked out with upgraded premium softwares. How are these sold with out the admins passwords etc during software updates via online? Perhaps they are not needed?

If I were to sell my laptop, with the latest OS and all these premium softwares what would I actually need to delete in order for my personal information to be safe?

Did you register your software when you downloaded it? That could be an additional source of personal information you hadn’t thought of. If you aren’t sure (and don’t get a good enough response here), you could always just wipe it clean to factory settings and forego the additional cash you could make. Personally, I would wipe the whole thing.

Side Advice:

You should consider downloading a free program called CCleaner or some kind of variation. You can use it to wipe the empty space on your hard drive 32 times, to make sure it is absolutely all deleted.

If you just did a simple 1ce over format, it is possible for the right person that knows what they are doing to un-delete the information so to speak, and see what they can find.

It is a long shot and a bit of a stretch of the imagination, but it is not impossible that you could use your computer to buy something with your credit card or pay pall, format the computer, then sell it, and have someone end up with your credit card details or something that you really don’t want them to have.

You should format the entire harddrive and then let the buyer install the OS he/she wants.

Personally, I don’t take any risks. Before disposing of my old computer (not even re-selling), I took out all the hard drives and completely destroyed them. There’s always a chance you’ll forget to delete an important file you created years ago, and someone will stumble across it. Get a qualified technician to swap out the hard drive for a new one, and make sure the existing one has a nasty accident.
