What are some cultural differences between the US and Russia?

Asked by baseone (14points) April 3rd, 2013

For example, in Asia it is right to take your shoes off before entering a house whereas in the US it is not looked down upon to enter a house with shoes etc.

Russia has a long history of oppressive regimes. The last Communist government even outlawed religion so when the government collapsed the population had no idea how to run a democratic government. The best they can hope for is a “president” that is compassionate and patriotic. I think they have to take baby steps. Putin may be a strong armed president but I doubt that the Russians are ready for a true democratic republic.

The U.S. had a democratic government and has been sinking into an autocratic form of government. In that vein the two countries are converging. Unfortunately the trend in the U.S. is towards less democracy. We are passing Russia on the way down.

My son married a Russian woman. There are exceptions, but it seems to me that this describes much of her outlook. “Emancipation might have spread all over the world but Russian women stay faithful to the traditional views of the male and female roles in a relationship. A Russian man is considered to be a provider who supplies the family with tangible assets, while a woman is viewed as a housewife and the mother of children. In contemporary Russia, many women use all the opportunities to get a good education, get a good job and build their careers. However, family (семья́) always remains the main priority for most Russian women.”
