Do you think that David Letterman is funny?

Asked by gondwanalon (22865points) April 17th, 2013

I was just wondering if I’m the only person in the world that thinks that David Letterman’s Top Ten Lists are just plain lame. A radio show that I listen too plays recordings of them during the day. They seem more twisted and bizarre than funny to me.

Not particularly. He does.

Thousands of people apparently do, but I don’t.

Generally speaking, if you find Jay Leno funny, you won’t find David Letterman funny, and vice versa. Personally, I have no idea why anyone laughs at anything Leno says. Ever. Letterman’s humour I get. Haven’t watched his show in years, but I’ve always enjoyed him.

Edit: One of the things to understand is that certain things, like the Top Ten, are kind of intentionally lame. The lameness is the joke. He pokes fun at the whole late night show thing, and always has. It’s kind of hilarious to read the comments on YouTube videos of some of his classic bits… where some people take it so seriously, and are either outraged or irritated, and others are like… “The fact that you don’t find this funny… is what is funny.”

My parents have been watching Letterman for years. Every now and then I’ll walk in on them watching it and find something funny. I haven’t watched enough of it to really evaluate it, but what I’ve seen seems decent. :P

I like him. Johnny Carson was my first love of late night. Then came Dave. Then came Conan. Then came Jimmy. Then the other Jimmy. Leno can suck it.

:edit: I forgot Arsenio

@jonsblond I love Conan. Have you seen the Inside the Actor’s Studio that he did? He had some interesting things to say about the Letterman/Leno thing, and the way he described the process of judging whether something was funny or not made me see all of these guys in a different light. Humour is a serious business to them.

Not a fan whatsoever. I understand the style of humor and can even appreciate it, though it is not my favorite, but it just comes off as forced and unfunny; you can just tell he takes himself way too seriously. I don’t find Leno funny either, with the exceptions of Headlines and Jaywalking, but the humor in those bits really writes itself. Both hosts are past their prime, in my opinion. I much prefer Jimmy Fallon and Chelsea Handler, and I loved Conan as the host of the Tonight Show, though I am not a fan of his TBS show.

Jay Leno could kick his ass in a fist fight.

I always preferred Letterman to Leno. I haven’t watched either of them in years, but I did find Dave funny and smart.

No, he isn’t funny.

Dave is funny to me. I think he’s way past his prime though. You know, he wasn’t raised in a fast paced witty environment the way the new school late night eccentric hosts are these days.

I prefer Goliath Sentenceman.

I’ve never card for Letterman. He’s too snarky for my taste. I always felt he had a chip on his shoulder. Not a Leno fan either. I used to be but I just don’t think he’s funny anymore. I still miss Carson.

I always liked him. I used to record his show because I couldn’t stay up that late. Now I just catch it now and again when I can’t sleep. But yes, I like his humour. And he can be funny without saying fuck every other word. Probably it is a generational thing. @dominicx says his parents watch him.

Talk show hosts aren’t “splitting sides” funny, but I do like their lame jokes and puns, especially Conan’s and Leno’s.

rebbel's avatar

To me he only looks funny.

Mama_Cakes's avatar

The only one who is funny, to me, is Conan.

livelaughlove21's avatar

Nope. I don’t like Letterman, Leno, Conan, Jimmy Kimmel, or any of the late night talk show hosts. Unless Jon Stewart counts.

ucme's avatar

Those American talk show hosts are like Ron Burgundy, only he delliberately acts crass/cheesy.
Jay Leno looks like the nurses delivered him at birth using a crowbar & one of those sink plunger things…nice cars though.

Nah, I used to but not anymore.

I love David Letterman. I think he’s funny in an offbeat way and I always felt that way. It’s kind of subtle humor, kind of wacky. I also think he’s sexy (I can’t look for it now, but there was a question on here a few months ago about who do you think is sexy that you’d be embarassed to admit? My answer was David Letterman). I think he’s collegiate looking. I can’t stand Leno. I like Conan but unfortunately I don’t watch his show now that it’s on some weird channel.

I’m sure you could all guess, I am a Conan fan. I used to think Letterman was cool when I was in high school (cough…30 years ago?... cough) but not any more. I love Jon Stewart, but the facts behind the irony and sarcasm is all too true to me and I had to give it up for my sanity, as surely as I had to give up watching any real news broadcast. The closest thing I get to a news broadcast now is Seth Myers. (I would NOT kick him out of my bed for eating crackers…)

jonsblond's avatar

@glacial I used to watch Inside the Actor’s Studio all the time, but I haven’t watched it in a few years. I’ll have to look for a repeat of that episode.

@cazzie It looks like Seth Myers might take over for Jimmy Fallon on Late Night I would really miss him on SNL, but it’d be cool if he got his own show.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Not as funny as Johnny Carson was.

talljasperman's avatar

I liked him when I was a child but he gets repetitive and I thirst for original content. I usually just watch for the monologue for laughs and last minute news, but I haven’t watched in years.
