Trimming body hair, how much should be left?

Asked by CuriousLoner (1812points) April 19th, 2013

Maybe this a dumb question, but very new to trimming or shaving my own body hair.

I am just a very hair person, and I just figured maybe some grooming wouldn’t hurt. Summer is coming and all.

However I am wondering if it is a good idea to leave the slight hair that is left over. It kind of looks like stubble I guess it’d be called, but is still soft to touch. Not noticeable from further away when I looked in mirror, but closer you can tell there is still hair.

Should I try to get it closer to skin, seem weird or odd to have a slight stubble or little like that?

I do have a before and after picture. Feel a little strange though to put a pic of myself like that up here…

Are you male or female? What part of the body are we talking here?

@CuriousLoner I’m a male. I am referring to chest ab and back mostly.

I trimmed the other parts as well, but I am fine with that. Also I don’t mess with my legs.

Why don’t you consider going to a beauty shop and get waxed? Or if you want to be trimmed, I’m sure they can do that too. That way you have a sort of template to work to in future or you might decide to just go and get your fur taken back a notch every few weeks or months. Manscaping. There will be a beauty shop near by that does it.

@Bellatrix I kind of thought about waxing, but thing is I actually don’t mind my hair. Just at times it’s like overkill haha. Seems older I get more hair I get. Damn family heritage. Mainly wanted to tone it down a level…I am not supper ripped or anything, but I do workout and fairly toned so I figured it was a good idea to do. I could try least one time…. (Probably won’t lol)

They will have clippers or whatever they can use, and you can watch how they do it so you can do it yourself in future (or not!). Do you have a lady? You could ask her to do it for you?

I hear you about wanting to keep some body hair and just wanting to tone it down, my concern would be if you trim the hair it will be itchy when it grows back, especially if you decide to remove any pubic hair. You don’t get that problem with waxing. Plus, waxing lasts longer. You don’t want to be getting the scissors or clippers out to keep things neat on a very regular basis if you are talking larger areas.

Why not give it a shot? If you don’t like it, don’t do it again. :-)

@Bellatrix No I don’t have a lady. I don’t think I’d ask her to do that anyways. Seems kind of weird to me haha.

I’ll consider it. Thanks for your help.

How’s your nose, ears and eyebrows? Those are the ones that I would be sure to have a professional wax.

@Judi No issues there.

Just my personal preference. I keep my beard and mustache closely trimmed. I can’t stand mustaches doubling as soup strainers. The only places I remove body hair are on my neck (all around up to the jaw and hairline, and the hair growing out of my ears and nose. But that just me, and my chest hair is light and fine, my back looks hairless but has a very fine downy hair on it. So YMMV.

It’s your body, man. Anything goes these days. Women can shave their heads bald and guys can wear ponytails down below their asses. Do what feels right for you.

personally, I like some hair on a man. It Separates out the boys…

If you are trimming so close you look hairless, you might want to consider using a razor, only because it feels nicer than fresh cut stubble. You can always use a guard to trim without taking so much off.

I’m also a wax fan, like @Bellatrix.

One more option is a hair removal product, like Nair. I trend to prefer Veet for sensitive skin if you go that route though.

Do whatever you think looks best. There are no rules here.

My husband isn’t very hairy at all. His leg hair is pretty thick, but from the waist up, not so much. He shaves what he’s got on his torso, but leaves the happy trail. Personally, I like when he gets lazy and grows it out a bit. A little hair is sexy and masculine.

My step-father, on the other hand, is really hairy. Chest and back like a gorilla. He trims it down and it leaves a bit of stubble that I think looks funny. He’s also completely shaven, which looks even funnier. I’d wax any back hair, but leave the chest/stomach hair if I were him. So, like I said, do what you think looks best.

On a related note, I’m firmly against men shaving/waxing their arms, legs, underarms, and pubic hair. Unless you’re a professional athlete, it just looks ridiculous. Men have body hair.

@Taciturnu If you were a male with a thick rug of chest or back hair, you probably wouldn’t like waxing unless the salon doing it had an anesthesiologist in the room.

Hubby’s is not real thick. His back hair doesn’t bother me so much but I’m glad he goes in and gets his nose ears and brow waxed! He likes a clean back so he does that too. Keeps his natural heart shaped patch on his chest.
