How can I get alerted about new RSS items?

Asked by andrew (16543points) July 6th, 2007

I want to set up a feed (or even a few feeds) and get alerted (maybe via growl or IM?) when new items get posted. Is there an app that can do this on a mac?

@Andrew -- Alex Payne wrote up a post about using Growl and Twitter together. You'll find it here. http://www.al3x.net/2007/01/growl-twitter-improved_21.html

I'm no techie so I don't understand the finer details, but perhaps with Alex's post and Twitterfeed, you'll be able to get what you need

Newsfire (newsfirerss.com) and netnewswire (http://www.newsgator.com/Individuals/NetNewsWire/) both support growl notifications. It doesn't look like either supports notification via IM.

There used to be a couple of web services that provided IM notification of RSS feeds, but they're gone. InstantFeed (http://www.biggu.com/instantfeed) was one. "Due to overwhelming popularity," it's no longer publicly hosted. You can download the source code and build your own application or website with it, but that might be excessive--or overwhelmingly popular... this sounds like a good web app to build!

Oh wait, it looks like http://zaptxt.com/ will do IM notification, as well as email and phone notification. It's not a mac app specifically but it might do the job.

For Windows machines, check out Eluma. It’s a desktop RSS Reader, desktop alert notifier, bookmark manager, and social sharing tool, all rolled into one. Not available on the Mac yet, though.
