What does a bad pinto bean look like?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46807points) April 29th, 2013

I’m making corn bread n beans. It was drilled into me at some point to carefully rinse and sort the beans and I always have. I think my dad told me that one bad bean can be a disaster. So, I’ve always taken out what looked like “bad beans”....but, I don’t know what one really looks like.

Not much of a science to it, just sort through them and if one doesn’t look like you’d want to put it in your mouth pull it out.

And rocks. Rocks are bad.

My impression is that you sort through them to remove non-bean objects. A bean with mold on it should be removed as well.

Most of the bad ones have prison tats.

and long criminal records.

I was taught to look for rocks, not bad beans.

Image of baby Jesus on it.

I was so tempted to say “George Bush”, but i resisted the temptation.

My indication (honest answer) is that one where there is more dark speck than light areas tends to be suspect. I don’t know if that’s really true, but it implied negative things to me.

@gailcalled I’m not going to look at each bean through a magnifying glass while my imagination is going crazy! No telling what I might find! :)

Well, I’m glad I’ve been doing it “right” all of these years. I just pick out shriveled beans and beans that just don’t “look right.” I leave the rocks though. :}~

If you’re starting with dried beans, throw out any that float while you’re soaking them. That’s basically it.

And, yes, rocks are bad.

@Seek_Kolinahr I started to do that earlier, then thought maybe that was just an old wife’s tale. But then I read ^^^ and they are removed.

I also cook them for a while until a foam appears, then I pour the water out, rinse them, and set them on again. I heard that reduces the gas.

Yes ma’am. That’s what The Bible tells me to do.

naughty, naughty beans!

Yep, those on the top are the kind I take out @bkcunningham!

My my my! Had them simmering for a couple of hours, got them rinsed, refilled with fresh water, put in a ½ pound of cut up bacon, a beef bullion cube pepper (no salt—figured the bacon and bullion cube would take care of that) some garlic seasoning and onion flakes. It is going to be SOOOOOO good! Just like Mom used to make! O wait. I AM Mom. :)

I used (past tense) salt pork in my beans and simmered them ALL day for the perfect soup beans. Chow chow, cornbread, onions and you are set.

Yep. It’ll be ready sometime tomorrow. Cornbread n beans….and oh the burritos I’ll have after that!
