What job (or path) should I go into, so I get to do what the hell I please?

Asked by talljasperman (21916points) May 2nd, 2013

Winning the lottery is not good enough… What is a good plan to have the freedom to do what ever I please, at my discretion? I’m Canadian so I can’t be President of the free world… And I don’t want to go into crime.

Self-employment?
Superhero?

I was thinking unemployment if you want to do “what the hell I want.”

@livelaughlove21 A self employed superhero. @Adirondackwannabe A freelance superhero.

@talljasperman I like the freelance superhero. While you’re rescuing and saving people you could grab some loot to support yourself.

Caped hero is a good place to start.

Write popular non-fiction books. You get to travel and talk to interesting people.

The better you are, the less you have to work.

John McPhee is the freelance superhero of the genre (though he’s worked pretty darn hard over the years.)

Susan Orlean is so awesome that Meryl Streep portrayed her in a movie.

Get a job that helps you learn the ins and outs of business. Banking could be a good one. Live beneath your means and purchase a couple of rental units. If you get a 4 plex you can live in one. It might not be where you want to live in the long run but a little sacrifice now will pay in the long run.
As you can afford it, improve the crappy 4 plex. Get the rents up and sell it to buy 20 units. If you will sacrifice the good life for about 10 years you can end up living the GREAT life. With interest rates so low it would be crazy not to do this if you are just getting started.

@Judi Is that sorta like flipping houses?

Marry a very rich, very old person and be nice to them.

I like @bkcunningham and @YARNLADY‘s suggestions. Self employment allows you to do what you want within the confines of making a living of course. And there is no paid vacation or sick leave and you have to pay your own hospitalisation. No you better skip that and marry a rich person.

Flipping houses only makes you money when they sell. Income properties make you money every month. After you have a few you can hire a management company who will do all the work and send you checks every month. If you only have a few units they’re to expensive but once you work up to 30 or 40 (on one site) the commission goes down substantially.
