A thread full of spoilers... what is the best surprise movie twist?

Asked by SuperMouse (30845points) May 3rd, 2013

I kind of hate to admit it but the one movie twist I did not see coming was the end of The Sixth Sense. Of course in hindsight it shouldn’t have been too tough to spot it, but it seriously caught me by surprise. What is you favorite movie twist?

My favorite of late is Remember Me

A must watch without knowing the spoilers. Someone suggested I watch it and let them know my reaction. I couldn’t count the OMG’s!

If you haven’t seen it, watch it and let us know your reactions.

I still wonder about the endings of Vanilla Sky and Inception. The endings of each were similar, and never explained, just left you hanging.

My head hurts too much if I try to figure out the ending of Donnie Darko. I’m sure there are websites explaining the plot, but I’d rather leave it a total mind fuck.

The way that The Life Aquatic ended, with us finding out that Steve couldn’t possibly have been Ned’s father, made the whole movie even more beautiful.

Fight Club‘s twist is pretty good; I didn’t see it coming, that was for sure. I’m still curious as to how it worked in the book.

I didn’t guess the ending to The Sixth Sense either. Then again, I was 10 when it came out.

I second Remember Me. I remember screaming ‘NOOOOO!’ inside my head at the movies when I figured out what would happen.

Another favorite is Shutter Island. My husband guessed the twist-a-roo about halfway through, but I was shocked as hell and so was my mother-in-law.

Also, the twists in Safe Haven, Chloe, Orphan, The Others, and “Seven” were pretty memorable as well.

The truth about Faye Dunaway at then end of Chinatown; well, ‘it’s Chinatown, Jake”.

I can’t believe they killed off Tony Stalk in Iron Man 3.

Oldboy had a great twist. One of the twisted-est twists I’ve ever seen.

I haven’t seen Iron Man 3, I deserved that one lol.

Oldboy’s twist was definitely unexpected.

I agree about “Sixth Sense.” I’m pretty good at figuring movies out, but that one really caught me by surprise. Same for “Fight Club,” although I begin to see that one coming further from the end than “Sixth Sense.” In these days of TV and Internet movie blather, it’s pretty easy to get the gist of most movies without having to see them, but those two somehow escaped early revelation.

Final Destination kept taking my breath away.

Another vote for Shutter Island. I didn’t see the twist coming and after it did I wanted the see the entire move over again.

The end of Identity when you find out that all the players are really just a serial killer’s various personalities.

whores don’t get a second chance

Saw 1… I should have figured it out before the end but I didn’t really expect the body on the floor to get up.

Pay It Forward, which has the same kid playing in it that was in Sixth Sense.
I was yelling NOOOOO at the TV. It didn’t change anything.

The Usual Suspects

@simone54 who’s Tony Stalk ?

Swimming Pool in that it doesn’t come too early.

The Sixth Sense caught me off guard, as well, but when I re-watched it, everything made sense.

If it counts as a “twist”, Black Swan also threw me for a loop.

Crazy, Stupid Love is a favorite of mine. I love the twist and I always wonder how I didn’t see it coming.

Sixth Sense is the one that really blew me away, too. I got it like seconds before it became obvious, and was so shocked. I kind of hate that I can never be surprised by it again.

Identity was good, too. The Usual Suspects, of course.

Bambi.

Damn that hunter!!!

I guessed the ending of Sixth Sense about ten minutes before they revealed it.

Another good one is History of Violence, although the twist is revealed a bit earlier in that one, because there’s more story afterwards.

I still don’t really understand Muholland Drive

simone54's avatar

@uberbatman That’s because it’s a piece of shit movie. Except Watts naked with that other girl.

DominicX's avatar

@uberbatman I understand it except for a few small things that I haven’t quite been able to place. But I have seen it six times…

I guess it would qualify as a movie with a twist, though I’m not sure the twist is apparent to most people at first.
