Need help figuring out my final grade for the semester.

Asked by 717richboy (234points) May 9th, 2013

My overall grade right now is a 79.1%. I have a paper that’s worth 15% and a test that’s worth 35%. I am sure that I’ll get an 80% or more on the paper. But as for the test, I am going to start at low-score numbers that way I am pressured to do well on the test. So, let’s say I get a 60% on the test. What will my final grade be?

79.1% * 50% + 80% * 15% + 60% * 35% = 0.7297

Your final grade would be 72.97%, assuming the minimum score for both the paper and the essay.

Where did the 50% (after the 79.1%) come from?

Can that be right, @PhiNotPi? I was wondering how you could even pass a class with a failing grade on the final.

@717richboy That is the percent of the final grade that comes from the current grade. The 15% is the paper, 35% is the essay, so the rest of the class must be worth (100% – 15% – 35%) = 50%.

Oh, duh. Nevermind, now I understand where the 50% came from.

Thank you :)

I get really nervous on tests, and don’t end up doing as well. But I do super well on all of the written work.
