Do I need WiFi for FaceTime?

Asked by nmguy (528points) May 10th, 2013

I’d like to use the FaceTime feature of my iPhone 4. Do I need to have access to WiFi (purchase AirPort Extreme or Express) in order to do this, or can I just select FaceTime when calling?

With the newer IOS you should be able to use your 3G. Give it a try.

According to Apple you need an iPhone 4S to use the cellular network. So yes you need a WiFi connection for an iPhone 4 ( not S ) to get Facetime to work. The person on the other end need the Facetime app and proper equipment. I’ve Facetime on my Macbook Pro, so I can do Facetime with my daughter with her iPhone 4S.

Yes you will always need a wifi connection to use Facetime with the iPhone 4.

iPhone 4S on the other hand is 4G or LTE enabled? and allows Facetime over cellular networks.
