NSFW - A few questions about your experiences with UTI (Females)

Asked by LornaLove (10037points) May 14th, 2013

On Thursday I started a UTI and it was really severe. By the evening I had to go to emergency to get treatment. I was given antibiotics, which were 2 tablets for three days. On the Friday the pain was still so bad and wretched I went back to emergency and was offered codeine. Which I declined since I am not fond of opiates. Or medications which make you ‘fly around the room’ so to speak.

When I went the second time they took another sample to check if the medications were correct for that particular bacteria. I was told to phone my Doctor today to check but I really was a lot better. I cant recall the name of the antibiotic I was given. Anyway here are my questions and I have also tried to search a bit on the internet, but any feedback appreciated (I realize you are not doctors but any shared experience or knowledge appreciated.

How long does it normally take for a UTI to clear up? Mine used to clear up pretty fast. Its still hanging around today and its Tuesday.

If you experience orgasm can it cause more pain (as it has for me) I think my bladder went into a spasm. As now I am peeing frequently again and its sore again. This point is probably most important for me right now!

In regards to pain what do you use? I cant use ibuprofen or any mood altering pain meds. Is Pyridium still available or Azo?

Does a bladder spasm cause the pain when the infection has been treated? And if so does waiting until the bladder is a little fuller work better as opposed to the ‘tiny bits’ of pee that burn like hell. Sorry this is so long!

UTI’s do usually clear very fast. It might depend on the particular bacteria though, and each individual would have different responses in terms of the inflammation going down even after the bacteria numbers are reduced. Drinking a lot of water should help keep the pain down. You will have to pee more, but it will be like water and less likely to sting I know it seems counterintuitive, but it really should help. If your pee is fairly yellow, you are not hydrated enough. Also, certain antibiotics prescribed for UTI will say on the bottle to take with a full glass of water. That is not because everyone tells you to drink water when you have a UTI, it is because medications that state that literally can crystallize and cause many problems. The water is to make sure the drug breaks down well.

You mention orgasm. Does that mean you are having sex? Your partner might be infecting you. At minimum you should pee after sex to try and clear any bacteria that might be travelling up your urethra.

@JLeslie No we didn’t have sex just petting. As I was too scared to have full sex. I just feel it made my womb spasm and therefore my bladder? I was feeling better today for the first day since it started, just a little burning at the end still but not as bad as before. But now its pretty sore again but not as bad as the initial which was agony. How does a partner infect one? (So I can avoid that). I was super careful too, washed hands, and washed after with none perfumed soap and loads of water. I did read some UTI’s can linger for up to as long as 14 days. But this is day six and although I did feel better today I feel anxious that I’ve caused harm again?

Having an orgasm shouldn’t cause any lasting harm. I would wait until you are all better to fool around though. So you don’t have to wonder what is going on and if you have done something. You fnished the medication right? You said you had three days of meds. Of the drug was the wrng one or not a large enough dose, and yu stopped taking it two days ago, then if it is going to reoccur it would be getting bad again by day three after stopping. The bacterias would have lived and started multiplying again once the meds were out of your system.

Did they isolate the bacteria? Was it E. Coli? Or, somehing else? Do you have any vaginal symptoms? Why not make an appointment with your doctor for a few days from now, and if it gets worse you will have the appointment. If it gets better you can cancel. Rather than going to emergency. It is impossible to culture while you are there, it takes 48–72 hours to grow. The second visit at the ER you were taking meds, so the cultures would not be accurate.

@JLeslie Yes I took the full course. I think that is a good idea to make the appointment regardless and chat about the urine sample that was sent to her. Or she may even say the medication was correct but feel I need another course (on the phone). Thanks I will do that. I still need to know though how a partner can infect one? If possible thanks. The pain was so bad I want to avoid it again at any cost.

If he has some sort of infection, like an STD. Things like ureaplasma and mycoplasma can cause symptoms and is not routinely checked, and can be passed between partners. I wouldn’t worry about him infecting you unless it happens again. Get this infection all cleared and then deal with possibly passing something back and forth if you get sick again. Is he a new sex partner? Any reason to think he cheated? If sex has always been fine with him then I would not think he caused the problem. But, if you are prone to UTI’s do take my advice to always pee after sex.

If the first course of meds did not work, most likely a repeat of the exact same drug at the same dose for the same amount of days will not work a second time. You either need different meds or to be on it longer.

Take all your medications. They CAN be hard to beat and if left untreated can move to your kidneys and even cause sepsis. Pope John Paul ll died from a uti. I’m assuming you’re much younger and have a better immune system than him though.
You can now by test strips over the counter for uti as well.

The Doctor phoned me this morning and said the culture had arrived. So collected my next lot of antibiotics. Which are four a day for a week I think. Already I feel some relief, its been a tough few days. Thanks for your feed back. Hope it’s not in my kidneys.

Sounds good! Hopefully this does the trick.
