How much could I expect to get in unemployment?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46811points) May 15th, 2013

I will be eligible beginning July 1. I was on unemployment once, many years ago, and if I remember correctly, the unemployment checks were roughly ½ of my working checks. Does that sound about right?

It depends. Are you wearing pajamas and eating Cheetos while you file your weeks?

I do not like Cheetos, Sam I Am. Are they going to ask me that? :)

I’ve been looking for work. I have 1 app out now. But living in a small town is a pain. I look in Wichita and they have hundreds of jobs that I would qualify for,but it just wouldn’t be feasible for me to drive 120 miles round trip every day. Locally there are 4 at the moment. CNA and forklift drivers and truck drivers.

I was just picking on you.

Yeah, the system sucks. My husband’s going through it now. There are literally ZERO jobs in his field anywhere in the area, or the area surrounding the area for a 50 mile radius. Probably further. Makes filing his weeks difficult, because you really quickly run out of possible places to apply. Then you have to start making shit up and hope they don’t notice.

I know this! :)

So, what is his unemployment check compared to the check he got when he was working?

His last job was minimum wage in a kitchen, and the restaurant closed. So he gets about $200 every two weeks.

Hardly worth the effort it takes to file.

Depends on the state. I would assume your state has the information on a website. My unemployment check was much less than half, but probably because I received the most eligible in my state. Didn’t matter if you made $50k or $100k you received the same amount.

Here in Massachusetts, it was 40% of the your average gross annual income (from the past three years), divided into 52 weeks. That was your weekly check.

You could choose to have taxes taken out or not, and pay them later when you file for the year. It lasted 33 weeks initially and you could file for an extension.

This was around 2006 when my wife was unemployed.
