Can you help me name that game?

There used to be a game that I spent a long time playing as a kid, but I can’t remember what it was called.

I was wondering, if anyone could name the game, based on some details.

The game had a kind of medieval fantasy/magic style to it. It played similar to “Heroes of Might and Magic”, in that you had to amass an army to defeat the opposing army.

The main layout of the game, was kind of a chess board mixed with a who is who board, in that you had images of all the units standing on the board, facing you, enclosed in separate boxes.

You had characters like wizards, rock men, devils, dragons, and so on.

You would move your units over the board, on a turn by turn basis, when your units met up on the board with an enemy unit, you would go in to a streetfighter perspective, with your units on one side, and the enemies units on the other, and you would have a turn based battle.

You could increase your numbers of units, if you had 2 rock men, you would get a little “2” in the corner of the units profile picture on the board.

The era of the game, is MS-Dos, from around about the time Doom was released.

Any ideas?

Sounds like Knightmare or possibly Dungeons & Dragons.

None of those so far.

Doom was released in 1993, which is long after the MS-DOS era. If you can figure out more or less which year it was, then I might be able to find it.
