What can you use to remove tear stains on dogs?

Asked by jesslc323 (127points) May 17th, 2013

I rescued my chihuahua close to a year ago and I have been trying to remove the brown tear stains under her eyes. Nothing seems to work. I have taken her to the vet and she has no eye infections of any kind what so ever. He suggested using contact lense solution. That didn’t work either. I have also tried multiple store bought products and no luck there either. Any suggestions? is there something I can make at home that I don’t need to buy?

When you took her to the vet, did they check her tear production (Schirmer tear test)? Did they use a magnifier to check for abnormal hairs on the eyelids (distichiasis)? A veterinary opthamologist is an option.

Tear staining can also be related to allergies. Make sure you’re feeding a high quality diet that’s not full of colorants and food additives (dog food should not be colorful. that’s crap that’s been added to appeal to humans, not dogs.)

As I agree with @syz without a doubt, I have my experiences that I want to share (as weird as they sound, they are all bizarre and true). As I don’t know if this will help a darker colored dog, I still want to share this with all the lighter colored dog owner out there too. I have a pure bred Maltese (white as white can be :) ) and over the 12 years I’ve found two things that helped with tear stains cycle.

First, I used Angel Eyes (no affiliate here, just first hand product referral) and that worked great. After about a week, all this tear stains grew out. As the stained part grew out, I just cut those off as the newly grown coat will be totally clear around his eyes.

Secondly (I know this is strange) but I use to add some ice to his water and over time by putting ice in his water and then not putting ice in his water (water bowl I should say), it reflected in the tear stair cycle. Ice in his water bowl over a few days and he had a lot of tear stains, when I didn’t add ice to his water bowl, tear stains would be less and less.

I hope to read a lot of other comments on what people has used to clear up tear stains in their pets! :)

An old show handlers trick is get Fullers Earth, mix it with equal measurement of Boric Acid Powder, add water to make a paste. Put it on the stain every day until the stain disappears and then just whenever you see the stains start to appear again. Don’t get it in the eyes and of course you know the usual disclaimer, discontinue use if the skin becomes red or angry.

Sometimes it is caused by an eyelash problem or what you are feeding (feed real food with a handful of dry tossed in, instead of vice versa proportions) But there are a lot of dogs that just get tear stains for no medical reason and that mixture will work well.

@syz Yes they checked her for everything. Her eyes are never weepy or wet they are just very badly stained :/

@DPJake My chihuahua is extremely white too and the brown stains are just awful. Is Angel Eyes a liquid you can wipe on the stains? or is it the powder that you mix in with their food? I’m a little iffy about the powders..

@jessic323 I’ve tried the wipes (little tissue wipe cloths things) to wipe off the stains and they never worked for me….the Angel Eyes is a mix in the food….they do have their own website for info www.angelseyesonline.com. ....I have the bottle in front of me, never had to use it all…..Ingredients: Sweet Potato, Brown Rice, Sodium Acid, Pyrophosphate, Tetra Sodium Pyrophosphate, Tylosin as tartrate
That’s all the ingredients it lists right on the bottle….run this by your vet first…. :) but it worked for my maltese great…...
