Does FB no longer give you the option of appearing offline?

Asked by workaholic (194points) May 17th, 2013

My chat is turned off, but my friend was able to see me online—with the green dot and all. And yes, I was on Facebook at that time. So did Facebook make another change to no longer give users the option to appear offline? And if that’s not the case, how do I fix this? Thank you.

Welcome to Fluther. This is news to me. I always have chat off. You used to be able to turn it off in the chat box area. I am hardly on fb so if they made changes it would explain why I am getting more messages when I pop on really quick. But I never investigated it.

Could you have been logged into Facebook on another device? One that always makes it appear that you’re online?

I agree with @glacial – FB still has the option to be offline, but it might reflect from when you are logged on from another device. I use the “offline” option all the time for some peace and quiet, and all chat session will default to my messaging inbox.

I never knew it was there, thank you for the information! I often wished I could just check in without getting caught by someone who wants to chat. So to answer your question, the option is available for me! thank you thank you thank you!!!

My mother texted me with this problem a couple days ago. I think it was some weird glitch. We still haven’t been able to fix it.

I have always had it off… yet a friend “messaged” me while I was on via the iPhone app the other day – and I saw NO option to turn it off. I’ve looked on the iPad, too and it is not there. However, on the laptop, it shows me as being logged-off of the chat.

Yeah, so I tested it out, and no matter where I am logged into Facebook, whether on my laptop or phone, people see me as “online” with the green dot. No option to turn it off. Really don’t like this at all.
