What do you think of the word-of-the-day today, thanks to our intrepid Auggie?

Asked by gailcalled (54644points) May 19th, 2013

I nominate “ultracrepidarian,” meaning someone who is the habit of giving opinions and advice on matters outside of one’s knowledge. (Coined officially in 1819, as it happens, but with its roots with the ancient Greeks).

It lives on the common Dutch adage also, “Schoenmaker, blijf bij je leest.” (Shoemaker, stick to your last).

A great word for this place, where all chime in on everything regardless of expertise!

Nincompoop being a suitable alternative.

That’s the name a lizard would have if it became a wrestler.

^^The referee would no doubt “monitor” it’s behaviour in the ring :)

An admirable word, excellent beyond the ordinary.

And one I never heard of until now. I hope I can remember it.

I love learning new words! Here’s where I found this one.

My favorite from that list is “scripturient”, meaning possessing a violent desire to write. The only one I was familiar with was “yonderly”.

^^ I get all scripturient when I see a question about food or cooking : P
