On your day off, do you have a problem, say reading the day away?

Asked by Mama_Cakes (11160points) May 22nd, 2013

Basically, reading, playing online or both (the day away). Breaks for bathroom and snacks.

I’m doing this today and I feel a bit guilty.

Hell no! Days off are supposed to be relaxing and rejuvenating, cancels out the purpose if you stay in hyper-drive mode.
It is only 1:03 in CA. and I am exhausted today, I am going to kick back, turn the living room into a movie theater matinee and watch Life of Pi.

Great flick!

I feel guilty not reading on my “days off” (which technically don’t ever exist—I just have to take them from time to time to keep from going mad).

I have been forcing myself to recover from a very rough year in school by playing Civilization and reading science fiction for hours at a time. Take that, history reading lists!

I’d be outside kayaking, but it’s piss-ass raining.

Occasionally I feel guilty for ignoring:
1 Hubs
2 Housework
3 Pets
4 Social functions

But for me, it’s the best way to completely relax. Especially on stressful days.

I can’t do it. Who will move the wood pile, cut the grass, clean out the Japanese maple blossoms in the rain gutter, write the report to my customer, change the battery in the tractor, fix my son’s car brakes… It is endless.

I can stay indoors if it is raining hard. Then I will Fluther so it looks like I’m working.

@LuckyGuy What kinds of books do you like to read, curious?

hearkat's avatar

No; but I get mad when the laundry hasn’t washed itself.

Aesthetic_Mess's avatar

No. One summer, that was basically all I did. I read six novels. It was incredible.

Sometimes when I am really into a riveting story I don’t notice the time od day nor whether
is flew by.

Nope, especially if it is while in bed with my husband.

Every few months, I take a “mental-health” day. Problem is I always feel guilty and end up doing chores instead.

I have a similar perspective to @LuckyGuy. My to-do list is endless.

In fact, I have a day off this Friday. Will I relax, read, and watch movies – or will I rent a power washer and clean my house?

9:09 here and I am going to bed to get my 9 much needed hours of zzzz;s tonight, everything else can wait. lol

I love to read and everything else you said but I get bored doing it all day. I need to keep moving. I am in the car today so have to sit still!!! And I am getting antsy!

What is this thing called a ‘day off’?

I can’t remember the last time I had a whole day and did no work. However, I don’t think you should feel guilty at all. I think you should enjoy the time and use it to recharge. Sounds like a great day to me.

I remember I had my near-death experience near the beginning of a summer vacation in high school, and damn I did not waste a second of my time for months afterwards. But the thing is, I consider “not a waste” to be anything that flexes my creativity, and reading falls into that category.

These days I still feel my best if I’m not wasting time, but I let myself have that down time too.
