Do people still play really, REALLY old online games?

Asked by ScottyMcGeester (1897points) May 27th, 2013

I still play Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, which is nearly a decade old now (Christ!) and there are still people who play. But I wondered about even older games. Like the old X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter Star Wars games or Star Wars Battlegrounds. I heard people still play the first Starcraft game online or something like that.

I still play all the Jedi Knight games as well as Battlegrounds, Empire at War and the Battle Front games (Holy fuckkks can’t believe they’re finally making BF3 ^_^) . I also recently got AOE2 and C&C RA2 but I rarely play any of these games online. I’d rather just mess around with them and enjoy nostalgia bliss on my own :P

About 30 years ago, I loved a game that involved crawling through caves and mazes, killing vicious dwarves, and collecting all sorts of items. There was a rusty gate that couldn’t be opened unless the player had already picked up a container of oil . A priceless Ming vase would shatter into bits, when placed back on the ground, unless the player had put a pillow beneath it.

There were no graphics, just words. We’re talking primitive DOS.

I can’t remember the name of that game. Does anyone else know it? Does it still exist?

Wait, wait, but I’m strictly referring to if you play them ONLINE still. Not just if you still play them.

Anyone up for a game of Pong? :-)

I don’t play online internet games anymore. Not too long ago, though, I was looking for a game I had played when I was young to bring back memories, but could not find it.
The game was about a leprechaun who would walk through some sort of maze to find gold or something. I played this on one of those beige, square desktop computers from the 90s. Ring a bell?

@SadieMartinPaul : I’m not sure of the specific game you described, but that was a MUD and I’ve played them too. People still make them, in fact!

@SadieMartinPaul I’m pretty sure the game you are talking about is Colossal Cave Adventure (also known simply as ”Adventure”). You might be able to find a downloadable version here.

If it isn’t Adventure, then it might be Zork. And if the game you’re thinking of is Adventure, then you still might enjoy Zork. That can be downloaded here.

I’ve never really played any online games, but the oldest game that I have played is LaserTank.

Most old online games still have a following, if the game was decent and above. Of course, the servers still have to be up for people to be able to play online. (I think, someone correct me if I’m wrong) I don’t like playing online, if and when I do, it’s PS3 games and I play them solely for the trophies. Some crappy games, even though they’re not that old, have no one to play with when you go in the lobbies and all. Therefore one must believe that people still enjoy Starcraft over Battle Phantasia. lol

by the way, lookin for help in Sacred 2

I LOVE MUDs (Multi-User Dungeons), and they’re purely words with no graphics so I imagine that’s about as old as you can get.

If you’re interested, you might try looking into www.armageddon.org, a futuristic/fantasy/survival game with about 50+ players to its name.

I’m also making my own at www.valindir.com

@SavoirFaire Yes, that’s it! I’d love to play the game again, but I don’t know which version to download.

Nowadays, there are plenty of tips and solutions available online. Back when I was playing “Colossal Cave Adventure,” there was no internet! I had to find my own way through all the twisty mazes. Sometimes, that involved going in circles for a half-hour or more.

Nearly a decade is “really, REALLY, old!”?!?!? Bitch, please! Some of us have socks older than that!

On the MMO front, I play Ryzom, which is pretty new; it came out in 2004 (9 years). but I also have been known to do online matches of Warzone 2100 (released 1999; went Open Source in 2004). My tastes in offline gaming run occasionally older than that.

According to Wikipedia, Netrek is the “third Internet game”. I don’t know how they qualify this, but I know Bolo came out a year earlier (1987, for the BBC Micro!) and is still played. Hell, I still play it occasionally (even though Linbolo seems to no longer be maintained).

I often still play unreal tournament 2004… There are only about 10 active servers left with “real” players.

My husband and I still play Never Winter Nights online. We have Never Winter Nights 2 as well, but we prefer the first one.

I still play the original Diablo.

I still love playing online games. Online computer games can indeed be stress buster for many.

I have friends that have been playing EverQuest for 13 years. I only played for 7.

I still play transport tycoon deluxe, I think that is early 90’s if I am not mistaken.

rexacoracofalipitorius's avatar

@poisonedantidote Just to clarify, TTD came out in 1995 and IIRC is not multiplayer or “online”. However, OpenTTD, first released in 2004, can be played that way.

I haven’t played Earth 2025 since 2001…. but I might try again because of this question. Edit they changed the main page… I don’t like it. I do use to play Star Trek Bridge commander demo disk since last year… and I finally stopped playing Civ 2.
