Have you read the Dark Tower series by Stephen King?

Asked by flip86 (6213points) June 1st, 2013

Should Hollywood adapt them into films? I think they should do a TV series just like Game of Thrones. It really is the only way to do the series justice.

They should cast unknown or lesser known actors in the roles.

Hollywood could not do justice to this series. The only movie of Stephen King’s IMHO that actually followed the book was The Stand.

I was very impressed with the Watchmen film, and the Lord of the Rings. They were both close enough to the books so as I couldn’t reasonably complain the movies were a waste of time.

I honestly think that that series peaked with the fourth book. I don’t know that I would turn into the last 3 movies.

@Imadethisupwithnoforethought I loved the first 4 books. Drawing of the Three and The Waste Lands were great. If only those 2 books became movies I’d be happy.

@flip86 Agreed. I read those and couldn’t believe how excellent they were, and waited patiently for years with high expectations for the last 3.

I have found people who picked them up later don’t complain as much about the drop-off in quality. Might be a high expectations thing. But those first 4 are unbelievably good, and would make amazing movies.

@Imadethisupwithnoforethought I didn’t really care for the ending of the series. It felt cheap. I don’t think King really knew how to end it.

@flip86 I am in agreement with you a second time. It got too big in his head. It was everything, and every one of his other books climaxed in it. So he rushed it, just to say it was done.

Great series. I need to get around to reading the last book. I’ve heard Russell Crowe might play Roland in a three film series. I hope not, don’t think he could pull it off.

@RareDenver Russell Crowe is an awful choice. If only Clint Eastwood was 40 years younger.

I would love Clint Eastwood in the role. Maybe liam neelson would be good.

I will probably never like the film adaptation I loved the books. Even the ending. Ok my first reaction was cheated and angry but I actually likew anticlimatic endings and it was like a revolving door I could never read the last book without starting on the first again.

Do you think Jim Caviezel could do it? He does the whole “I’m Batman” type voice in Person of Interest that I think could suit Roland.

I’ve read the first four books (I think?). When I first tried to read the series years ago, I could not get into it at all. Second time around, I’m enjoying them a lot more. A mini-series seems suited to the body of work, but who knows what will happen.

I’ve been saying this for years.

@flip86 – Yes!
For a while, Ron Howard was attached to direct it and they were going to do movies and TV shows. It look like there are talks again and it might be on the table. Honestly, I’m quite happy with the books; I finally finished Vol. VII about a year ago, and thought they were all brilliant. The ending was unique. I think it means each time Roland will get a little closer, the circumstances will change a little bit, and the outcome might be a little different.

Anywho, there are certain books that I think should remain books, and although I loved the stories, I’d probably skip the movies. That’s how I feel about the “Hunger Games,” too. They just clicked in my head so well, that I think I might be offended by them. However, if King were on the project – and I don’t mean executive producer, – if he was actually writing it, then I might give it a shot. I do like Ron Howard, and if it were an HBO series, maybe… but I don’t think it will work. It’s just too epic.

Oh, and “Wind Trouugh the Keyhole” was really, really good. That could be a great stand-alone movie. Set in Mid-World, but you don’t have to be a Dark Tower junkie – or even a King junkie – to enjoy it.

@serenityNOW Wind Through The Keyhole is the only one I have left to read, glad to hear its a good one b

@RareDenver – Yeah, tell me what you think when you’re done.

Slightly off topic, but I felt like this was going to be a light year on the Stephen King front, and then he put out his essay, “Guns,” he has a libretto of a play/musical coming out tomorrow, a new novel coming out tomorrow, a new short story, the sequel to the Shining and probably one-or-two things being published that I forgot about. Light year indeed!
