Can I file for unemployment early?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46811points) June 6th, 2013

Lets say that I know my last day of work will be June 30th. Can I go ahead and file now and get that ball rolling? I figure, it’s the government. Could take weeks, maybe more to actually start receiving it.

Sometimes states require a one-week waiting period after the final date of termination to even accept any information on your claim. It varies by state but that’s how it goes in WA. Definitely call them to see what you can do.

NYS you have to be out of work before you can file. But their pretty good at getting you a decision.

I’m checking the application. They say I need to check my:

Credit score (optional,)
My public records (optional)
My Social Security Benefits Eligibility (optional)
(Optional) Check for jobs in my area (optional.)

Then below that are check boxes that I’m supposed to verify that I did all that…it doesn’t FEEL optional.

My credit is OK. Not stellar like it has been in the past.
My public records might, or might not, show that I got a ticket for a dog at large 3 years ago.
Pretty sure I don’t qualify for SS.
I’ve been checking for jobs.

WTH??? Why do I have to check it all, only for them to come in behind me and check it again?

In California, you can file during your last working week.
