A good book that walks you through the history of mathematics?

Asked by inunsure (423points) June 12th, 2013

I want the book to clearly explain the major works in mathematics through out time from Euclid to Godel.

They don’t have to go extremely deep on the subjects just enough to get an understanding how how they work out the main problem

I thought of Logicomix right away. It’s the story of Bertrand Russell and Alfred Whitehead’s work on their Principia, a quest to unite the world of mathematics into one consistent, complete logical system (and how Godel shattered their dream.) It does go into mathematics history quite a bit, although it might not be quite complete.

If I think of any non-comic-book examples I’ll post them.

A classic is Men of Mathematics by E. T. Bell.

I’d start with The Story of 1 A wonderfully funny story of math.
