Is it realistic to think I can make money selling stuff like this?

Asked by El_Cadejo (34610points) June 14th, 2013

I’ve never really sold anything online especially anything handmade. A couple days ago I was playing around with some bleach and did this to my pillow case. It got me thinkin that this came out pretty nice and it was only my first attempt at something like this, I could probably get a lot better at it. Do you think I could make money selling shirts and stuff like this?

Does anyone have any experience selling on etsy? What is it like?

Perhaps. There is a market for everything. You have to figure in the cost of materials, labor, and shipping and handling.

@marinelife well I was thinking plain shirts are usually pretty cheap as is bleach. S&h it seems is usually around 5 dollars but that is put on after and is just an inevitable thing to deal with when buying stuff online. All that really leaves is labor. Depending on the design I do it could be pretty labor intensive but most stencils wouldn’t take me more than an hour to do. I was thinking if I could sell shirts for ~10–15 I’d make out pretty good.

Did you also stencil the design? It’s pretty cool.

Before you charge ahead too fast, though, I’m going to suggest waiting to see what this item looks like after being laundered a couple of times. If the bleach keeps working on it, or the design fades too fast, you’re going to hear from unhappy customers. Best know what to expect.

Also, I’m no expert on fabrics, but I would think you’d want to repeat the test for designs made on other materials, since the coloring and bleaching agents might behave differently on different types of cloth.

Raygun Robin seems to be doing well with it.

As @Jeruba suggested, bleach can cause changes in fabric. At worst, it can eat away at it and cause holes. The bleached places weaken the fabric.

@Jeruba Yea I just cut out stencils from freezer paper and ironed them on.

Good idea though I’ll give it a few more washes before I move forward. As per other materials I’d really like to stick to just using cotton. I want to make comfy shirts :)

@Seek_Kolinahr Thanks for that, lot of cool stuff there .

If you work out all the kinks, I’m sure you could do well selling them… Offer a variety of designs. I had a friend who did the same technique to make Disney shirts for her whole family to wear at Disney world.

@Nessie26, I sure hope Disney’s merciless legal department didn’t catch up with her.

Your design is at least as interesting as anything by Jackson Pollock, in my opinion.

There are a lot of these ‘consignment’ stores which will display arts and crafts and sell them for you for a small commission. This would be an easy and low-cost (or no-cost ?) way for you to get your work out there and see what happens…

I don’t know about making money of that, but it’s pretty cool.

I think that looks pretty cool, and there is a lot of much shittier and unoriginal stuff on the internet that is sold every day, so yeah why not.

I think if you made some space themed shirts using that method they’d be pretty damn awesome. I’d buy one. Make me one with a moon on it and I will send you money!

So I wore a star wars shirt out last night that I designed in a similar way. I had 3 people ask me where I bought it which was pretty cool :) One of the guys I was talking to carves long boards and needs someone to do the artwork for them so he said he’d pay me commission on anything I designed that sold. YAY :)
