What is your funniest "musical epiphany"?

Asked by jordym84 (4752points) June 15th, 2013

I’ve been listening to Norah Jones for years now and one of my favorite songs by her is Man of the Hour. I’ve heard this song countless times and I always thought it was a sweet song about a great (human) love. Well, imagine my surprise when I suddenly realized that, all along, she has been singing about a dog! Now, every time the song comes on, I can’t help but laugh at myself for having taken so many years to figure out what she was really singing about, despite always puzzling over the fact that the song ends with a dog bark.

Do you have a similar story you’d like to share?

I was belting out singing in the car when my kids said, “mom, do you know what you’re saying?” For the first time I paid attention to the words,
“Mama’s got a squeeze box Daddy never sleeps st night! She goes in and out and in and out..”
I had been singing that for years and never listened to the words. I would have never sung it in front of my young children if I had realized it. They still tease me for the way I blushed.

I just read this article recently. It’s pretty interesting.

A couple days ago, the song Birdhouse in Your Soul by They Might Be Giants came on. I decided to look up the lyrics and found out that the song is about a nightlight expressing its feelings.

Mad Season by Matchbox Twenty was a huge hit when I was just entering adolescence. I listened to it endlessly. It was only about a decade later, when I was in college, that I realized that it was a breakup album, and a damn good one.

When it was first released I loved Golden Brown by the Stranglers. I thought it was about a girl with golden brown hair. Only later I discovered it’s about heroin addiction.

I recently discovered a song on Pandora – Pumped Up Kicks by Foster the People. So catchy.

I downloaded it and have been playing the heck out of it in my office – at work – at a college.

Then I finally listened to the lyrics and figured out it’s about a kid with a gun fantasizing about a school shooting.

You better run, better run, faster than my bullet.

Funny, I guess I never put 2 and 2 together either @cookieman.
I agree that it’s very catchy.

@Katniss: Right! It sticks in your head and is so upbeat. I still like the song – just wont be playing it at work. ;^)
