What is the next lighter shade of Clairol haircolor after light brown?

Asked by Aster (20023points) June 30th, 2013

I am getting gray hairs in my bangs and in front of my ears. The rest of my hair is medium brown with something I find interesting: on the right side I have hair that is copper. No; not the metal , the color. And it shines. I think this is one reason my daughter is a redhead. Anyway, I’m thinking of going much lighter than medium brown just for fun and to see how it looks. Does anyone know the color that is one shade lighter than light brown? Not sure if they even sell light brown in Clairol. Thank you.

There are other “dark blonde” colors… golden or neutral or ash refer to how warm or cool the hue is. Even between Clairol brands, they name and number them differently, it seems. Have you gone to their website? I haven’t been since they discontinued the color I was using, but I recall they had useful tools to choose the color. If you aren’t currently coloring, you might consider other brands, too, such as L’Oreal and Garnier. As high as their marketing budgets are, I’m confident that they all have good websites.

I’m going to suggest something kind of different.

Don’t match your hair – change it. Go for a coppery blonde/coppery light brown color. You’ve got a little bit already, so you’re just enhancing something natural.

Get a box of semi-permanent color and try it. If you like it, keep it, only next time choose a shade that’s permanent (because it’ll cover the gray better). If you don’t, it’s easier to color over a semi-permanent color.

Or go to a good salon.

And don’t forget to color your eyebrows too (do so with extreme care, using a q-tip or old toothbrush or makeup brush to apply it carefully).

I might (cough) be a little prejudiced, being a redhead and loving red hair. But I’ve seen makeovers on TV where they give women red, copper, auburn color where they were brown before and the color just woke them up and made them glow.

Let us know how it comes out.

But remember, as we age, not only does our hair lose pigment, but so does our skin. It begins quietly and continues. So if you go redder, keep in mind that in another few years a really red look will make your face look washed-out by contrast.
