How does one become a big brother or big sister?

Asked by Equestrian18 (144points) June 30th, 2013

Recently I’ve become very interested in the idea of becoming a big brother/sister and mentoring someone. Does anyone have any personal experience with this? What are the requirements? I’m 23 and think I can really help some young ladies not make the same mistakes that I’ve made. I’d like to reach out to high school kids too. Does anyone know what the process would be like or what kind of candidates they want? Thank you so much.

Search online for the “Big Brothers/Big Sisters” organization in your area. They should have all the information you need.

I applaud you, @Equestrian18, for your desire to do this; it’s a wonderful undertaking and would be a unique experience for both you and the child. But please be absolutely certain you’re willing to make it a long-term commitment. You can give so much to a child, but you can also take away so much if you aren’t willing or able to stick with the relationship through thick and thin—and take it from one who knows, there will be periods of both.

Please understand that I am not trying to dissuade you from doing this, only cautioning that before you’re accepted into the program (not an easy process, itself) that you understand how big the responsibility is of mentoring a child, whose life has probably not included easily made or solidly built connections with adults.

Again,. kudos for considering doing this. Just please, consider it carefully.

My sister did it through Catholic Charities.

It may not be called Big Brother/Big Sister in your area. If you can’t find a local number online, contact the school secretary, and if that doesn’t work call the nonemergency number for Social Services. One of them should be able to put you in touch with whoever you need to contact.

In addition to the above, you could check in with your local community centre and they should be able to refer you to a few programs.

i believe there are non-governmental organization in your area or around which maybe offering the same kind of services that you could offer to young girls as you say, and that is where i think you would probably fit in and make a difference to the lives of those kids.

I think it would all start there to gain all the necessary experience rather, then if conditions are not too well there, you can find a few fellows of your kind and register a group that would take your campeigns to your target group.

Hope this help.
