What is this phenomenon?

Asked by XOIIO (18328points) July 2nd, 2013

I’ve had it happen a few times, and I’m sure you have too, where you wake up, and everything just feels… wrong. The place you live in, your stuff, what you are doing, the people you know, everything just feels off, and it lasts the whole day, then you wake up the next day and you are fine.

What’s the deal with this, is there a name/explanation for it?

I’m not sure if there is a name for that sensation, but I think The Talking Heads might have nailed it.

@bookish1 Well, that is the most random video I have seen in a couple months.

Take a look at this article on derealization and see if it fits what you’re talking about.

@XOIIO: It was one of the first music videos ever to be shown on MTV, in 1980.

Post-caffeine, it also occurs to me that this might be the sensation known as Unheimlichkeit.

A normal part of the ups and downs of life. In terms of brain chemistry it looks like a lack of noradrenalin and dopamine.

No, you’re wrong to be sure, never happened with me.

A few times? The next day you are fine? Good for you if it’s only a few times and it’s over the next day. I guess you belong to the normal side then.

@ZEPHYRA As far as I can remember it’s only happened three or four times in my life.

I have had this feeling occasionally but it never lasted more than an hour or so. And yes, that article on derealization describes it exactly.

There’s a joke by Steve Wright that I’m reminded of; “I woke up this morning to find that everything in my house had been stolen and replaced with an exact duplicate.”

I was going to say ‘derealization’, too. I’ve experienced it a number of times, most often when I’m depressed. Depersonalization, too, which is even weirder. I felt like I was watching myself in a movie or something. Glad it hasn’t happened for a long while!
