Is there a television show or movie that is set in (supposedly) your region? If so, what inaccuracies take you out of the story?

Asked by Blueroses (18256points) July 5th, 2013

The A&E series, Longmire(TV_series) is set in my neck of the woods and the author of the original stories is actually a native of the area.

California production teams get details wrong (aside from filming in Santa Fe, NM because apparently one western state looks just like another).

The main error is that all of the characters, who have been there long enough to know better, pronounce the name of the region incorrectly! It’s Absaroka (right on the MT/WY border) and only an outsider would pronounce it Ab-so-ROKE-ah. It’s Ab-ZOR-kah, or Ab-ZOR-key, and much of it is green and mountainous, not as much high-plains desert.

Don’t even get me started on the episode where the second-generation stock detective is tracking cattle thieves and refers to an obvious steer as a heifer.

So, what has Hollywood gotten wrong when filming something in your field of expertise?

The FX show “Justified” takes place about ten minutes away from where I live. Haven’t seen the show, but I’ve heard it’s really good.

But none of the show is filmed in Lexington KY. Most of it is filmed in California and Pennsylvania

When speaking in English, Mexicans do not switch to Spanish for a second to refer to the president as “el presidente”.

In Plain Sight was filmed in Albuquerque. The most amusing diversions from reality were when the characters cited intersections that didn’t exist because the streets actually run parallel to each other. They also sexed up the city quite a bit with time-lapsed flyover shots.

Car chases set in San Francisco are amusing. The routes they follow are not possible as a continuous route. I’m sure that’s true in other chase scenes elsewhere. It’s distracting, and it interferes with your involvement with the movies.

I remember doing a double take when a West Wing character made a reference to the “Vermont-Ontario border”. Does that count? :)

I didn’t like it when the inspector Gadget movie messed around the back stories.

Dear John, Safe Haven, and The Notebook all had South Carolina connections. Must be a Nicholas Sparks thing. The inaccuracy comes in when people think all of SC is that pretty. I don’t know where they’re at in Charleston, but I’d love to visit wherever that may be.

The film, The Mona Lisa Smile took place on the campus where I attended college purportedly during the time that I was there.

It was filled with anachronisms, inaccuracies and paper flowers wired to the trees to make it look like spring. Plus, it was a terrible movie (and there were no professors who looked like Julia Roberts on staff then).

Cringe-worthy. I have no idea if it’s accurate, I can’t bring myself to watch it. The commercials are bad enough. (And yes, I’ve been to Lizard Lick.)

Psych takes place in Santa Barbara, and they are pretty good about keeping to the locale. One exception is a story about an amusement park. There is nothing remotely like that there.

The Mentalist is set in Sacramento, but very few scenes have anything to do with that area.

Blueroses's avatar

@syz That is a very badly scripted “reality show” and it’s cringe-worthy no matter where you call home. I would bet it is insulting to real residents.
I
@bob_ Yes! And also any show where they portray people speaking a language other than English (but they are speaking in English, rather than being subtitled so that you can feel a part of the scene)... why do they have to speak in foreign-accented English? If the point is to make you feel like you’re a part of the scene, why throw in the accent?

@Blueroses I don’t know, seƱorita.

Any show having to do with DC. NCIS, Criminal Minds. They always have a scene where they are after someone and they somehow manage to make it 90 miles or more and make it back to the office in the same afternoon. Traffic in DC is a nightmare. You can’t just zip through town and not hit a light in every corner. Especially in the summer time. It kills me when they have a case down in Virginia Beach and make it back to the office and then they are back in the crime scene the next morning or later on in the afternoon. It takes anywhere from 3.5 hours to 4.5 hours to get to Va. Beach. There is one main road that they would most likely take and that would be 64. It is horrible in the summer. So is 95. Taking 95 and 64 to get there will always land you in delays. Taking any of the smaller roads will also delay you.
They always make it seem like the drive was down the block.

Coronation Street is the famous one. It’s far more exciting than real life though. There are far more affairs, deaths and explosions than there are in real life.

Die Hard 2 is set at Dulles airport in Washington, DC. However, there are Pacific Bell phone booths and maps of Los Angeles at the airport.

The original X-men carton depicted that Sabre-tooth lived in my hometown Edmonton Alberta. I thought as a kid that they were depicting me or my dad, both are over 6’3”. I was amazed that our little city was finally mentioned in a cartoon. I sometimes don’t cut my fingernails and they look like claws.

There’s a great movie about an East German pastor who helped bring down the wall with Christians and atheists meeting at his church working hand in hand.

There are way to many to mention North to Alaska, the Grizzly Man, ok that may have been a true story but he was a drug addled idiot and him as a representative of alaska just sucks…

That sarah palin show. Ok I only turned it on once, but she doesn’t come close to representing alaska either.

I never watched alaska state troopers but those cop shows always pick and choose. I know a couple of people who were filmed for the possibility of showing.. But they only show what ever they think will get the most viewers. So in other words all the idiots they can push around.

There is another show about some villagers leading subsistance life. I know of and have seen some of those people in town and that is only part of their life. I also know they suppressed racial divirsity for example there is a single parent on the show, I won’t reveal more to protect the families identity who has a child that is half black. Also one person on the show normally wears thick glasses and you can tell the person is for all intents and purposes pretty blind for the shots.

downtide's avatar

@mattbrowne that sounds like an interesting movie. What’s it called (and is it avaibable in English, or subtitled)?

mattbrowne's avatar

@downtide – I just checked this and, unfortunately, no English subtitles or dubbing. There’s also the book, but it hasn’t been translated. Sorry.

X-men in “alkali lake” in Alberta, I can’t see any secret military base but me and my dad did some overfishing.

bob_'s avatar

@talljasperman If you could see it, it wouldn’t be secret.
