My animal lover daughter is allergic to cats :( - any suggestions for an affectionate diurnal pet?

She is so sad because she'd love something furry. I've always had cats, and my heart is breaking for her. Would a flying squirrel trigger allergies? Any ideas for a pet that would know she's alive that she could give a whole lot of loving to?
