What is the right number of days to work from home?

Asked by Tachys (1531points) July 16th, 2013

I have been working from home sporadically, and recently have tired of the commute and office politics. I can increase the number of days working from home. My boss is really flexible and supportive. I feel working from home full time may be too isolating.

How many days a week do you think I should work from home and why?

What are some tips for working at home for extended periods? I have a great home office set up already.

I think working from home at least 2 days a week is more than enough. That means you get to go to the office 3 days a week and stay home 4 days. But it really depends on you.

When my husband was doing 2 days a week at home he was getting bored and feeling sluggish. When he went to 1 day a week he got back to being his old self.
To work from home you really have to be able to separate your home and your work. Home is where people feel relaxed and are able to get away from work at the end of the day.
So I think for some people they can either get too relax and not accomplish much or their home starts to feel like a work place and not a safe and relaxing haven.

@Tachys what kind of work do you do? Who do you interact with as part of your work?

All of them, in my opinion. I freaking adore working from home! If working from home full-time doesn’t feel right for you, I’d try what I did years ago: I went into the office for a full day every Wednesday, and spent a half day there every Monday and Friday, working from home the rest of the time.

I work from home five days a week. I like it and I have no problem separating work and home.

I think two days at home and three at work is a nice mix that makes you still feel in the loop work-wise.

Depends on your situation. If you have kids at home it isn’t as practical. They don’t understand work when they’re young. Or if you do you’re work face to face or on the phone. I don’t like people going through my home to get to my office.

Working from home three days a week should be plenty. Just go into your office and work. Make sure others in the home will not interrupt you.

I work from home every day – except when traveling to customer locations or attending in-office meetings. I don’t find it isolating at all – I love it..but then that’s probably because I’m an introvert.
Another option would be to just go into the office when you have a meeting that is best attended in-person or an issue that requires a face-to-face meeting.

My home office tips:
1. Have a specific place you work from (you probably already have this) and try to walk away from the office at the end of the day. Turn off the computer and just.walk.away.
2. Have you considered a treadmill desk? I love mine.
3. Take your lunch breaks. Meet friends for lunch if you need/want social interaction.
