Anyone undergoing hormone supplementation therapy with testosterone?

Asked by theodiskaz (546points) July 23rd, 2013

I am a month into it and would like to know what psychological effects you are experiencing, aside from increased libido or increased aggressiveness. I seem to be experiencing some things which I do not find to be common.

Ah, nuts. I put a comma where it did not belong. Last two topics should, of course, be combined into: “The place where hormones and spirituality and self image meet.”

Yes, I take 200 mg of Progesterone every night, along with estrogen.

Psychological effects? None, except for being upbeat and happy. I feel fabulous, my bones are strong, and my complexion is amazing. I’m lucky to have an OB/GYN who believes that every woman should stay on HRT therapy until the end of her life; the supposed risks are unsubstantiated, but the benefits are undeniable.

Thank you, Sadie. I myself have begun to feel pre-occupied with my wife, but not just sexually. I mean with what she is doing or thinking. how she is doing etc. And I have started feeling more connected with my grand-kids, who live with me. More nurture-full, talkative and attentive. It is interesting, and most welcome.

I have been on testosterone therapy for 2 years as part of my transition from female to male.

Aside from the physical changes, the psychological ones I noticed were:
1) Needing more sleep (this lasted about a month)
2) Feeling more emotionally stable, less mood swings.
3) Vastly increased libido (this is still high but has settled somewhat since the first few months)
4) Feeling more energised and more motivated
5) Finding it much more difficult to cry. I sometimes feel like I want to, but it just doesn’t happen.

I have also not experienced any increase in anger or aggression.

Like @downtide, I’m not supplementing, I’m replacing :)
Just stuck a needle in my thigh last night.
I feel calmer and more even-tempered. I used to be constantly depressed; that was my baseline. Now I am much more capable of happiness. What I call the “constellation” of my emotions has shifted; when I am upset now, I tend more toward anger rather than depression, which I consider a positive thing for myself, because I used to tail-spin into depression very easily, and anger gives more energy and motivation than depression. I am a very gentle and peaceful person and I have not had any problems with anger management or violence. I find it physiologically more difficult to cry, but I am still able to.

@theodiskaz, if you are experiencing worrisome or unusual side effects, please ask your doctor about them.

Hey thanks @downtide and @bookish1. Prompted by your responses, I will investigate psychological affects on females of T therapy, as some of what you have mentioned seems to be happening to me, which is interesting. I am a 50 year old male.

@theodiskaz : The psychological effects can be similar, regardless of what sex you were assigned at birth. I’m not sure how much use it will be to you, but there’s a lot of information on FTM hormone therapy in this book, which is designed for trans men and their doctors.
