How can I delete this file?

Asked by Mimishu1995 (23624points) July 28th, 2013

Today when I tried to delete a file using the old right-click method I got an error message: “Cannot delete _____: element not found”. I tried using the program Unlocker but that didn’t work. Can anybody here help me solve this problem? I’m using Window XP.

Are you sure the file has not already been deleted? Maybe the shortcut still exists, but the file is gone…I have had that happen to me before.

Check and see if there is anything in the file by doing a search of the hard drive for the file name.

It may be open on a particular program. If so, try closing it first.

Restart your computer, then try deleting it again.

Did you read this whole article about locked files?

Update: Sorry for such a silly question :p This question was written in a hurry.

This is the whole background story: I was trying to download two parts of a .rar file using IDM from a file hosting server called downloadani.me. The first file was downloaded without any problem, but when the second one was 100% complete and IDM was putting all downloaded pieces into one, I received an error message saying something like: “Cannot rename ______.part2.rar from C:/———to D:/———-. Element not found”. Then it seemed, for some mysterious reason, that the part1 file was corrupted as well and it stayed there in my computer no matter what I did to delete it (restarted, used Unlocker…). I was so scared that my parents would put the blame on me (this computer was used by all member of my family, and that file was rather large) that I immediately got here and seek help from you all. It was almost midnight and I had to go to bed, explaining why the question is so brief :p

A few minutes ago I’ve figured out the problem. I tried downloading the file again and went to the C:/ location the error message pointed out. I deleted the download data of the files and now I can say goodbye to them :)

Anyway thanks for all your answers :)
