How key a role did spirituality play a part in human dominance on Earth?

Asked by _Whitetigress (4378points) July 28th, 2013

In other words, do you think we’d be where we are today without spirituality?

Let’s define spirituality as believing in a deity for this questions sake.

Belief in some kind of deity was key in our development. Without belief in a god of some kind, there would be no religion, and without religion, we would have not organized in to societies and cities as soon as we did.

The legal aspects of religion are kind of what got us out of the fields and in to the cities, and got us all living together on a scale larger than before.

However, I do think that this is just the way it played out this time. It would have been just as possible to set up cities and taking over parts of the planet without religion and without any beliefs, I just think it would have taken longer.

Religion allowed the masses to be manipulated and structured in to societies before we were smart enough to do it on our own.

Without religion, it would have taken longer. Having said that, without religion we would have developed faster once we finally did start to develop. Without the dark ages and the burning of libraries and other things to hold us back.

All in all, I think religion/spirituality was key in our development, but it was not essential, we could have done it without it, it would have taken longer, but once the ball was rolling, it would have rolled further than it has with religion.

Wait, is someone actually arguing that we didn’t have cities before the Bible or do you count Ra as a spiritual figure? Athens was a few thousand years before the bible.

@johnpowell I’m guessing @poisonedantidote is not limiting his answer to the Abrahamic God or Abrahamic religions.
