Do I have to throw out all of my eye makeup?

Asked by cutiepi92 (2252points) July 28th, 2013

So the day before I had pink eye, I applied eye makeup at 7:30 that morning as I always do. I had zero signs of any infection. The next day I woke up at 10:30 am with pink eye. So that day I did not use any makeup. Since I didn’t use the makeup when I was infected, do I still have to throw it out because I used it the day before? I know it wasn’t the makeup that did it because it’s brand new; I just have been recovering from a cold and it isn’t the first time I’ve had pink eye after a cold.

Do not throw them away. Maintain your eye health. And do not do eye make up. Find the reason why you got pink eyes.
Everything would be better.

I’m not doing makeup for the duration of the infection and the reason I got pink eye was most likely due to the cold I have been fighting for the past 2 weeks. Everytime I’ve gotten pink eye it was always towards the end of a cold, not from others but from my own germs getting into my eyes. I’m probably more prone because I wear contacts.

So don’t throw the makeup out?

Absolutely throw out your mascara and eye liner. If you want to take a risk with your eye shadow you can, but if you get the pink eye right back then you will have to throw out everything again, even the new mascara and eye liner.

Also, you should never keep mascara more than 6 months. 3 months is actually the recommended time. Mascara, and lquids in general breed bacteria.

Eyeliner pencils are easy to keep. Wash the tip and then shave the rest off.
Mascara, throw out as @JLeslie recommended.
Powders, I would replace the applicators and white the top of the power off and leave in the sun. Sanitize the case since most germs are passed on by rubbing your eyes and then touching the case.
Germs and bacteria don’t breed for too long when exposed to air and sunlight.
Change pillow cases, change your towels regularly till you are better. Sanitize all surfaces you tend to touch throughout the day. Door knobs, remotes, handles, books, etc.

grr I’m so sad. The mascara is what I hate to lose most because literally the day before I was sick was the very first day I ever used that $30 tube :’( the feels…....
