What do you think this world is coming to?

Asked by Mp123 (317points) August 1st, 2013

You see how everything now is all about material and people would be ready to do anything to be richer or get any sort of material possession. We are more and more brainwashed. Get this buy this you need this. What do you think is happening?

People have been saying that for years. What drove you to say it today? All I have seen this week are friends’ discussions and links on mindfulness and spirituality!

We should be getting to… Friday, if we’re lucky.

I’m concerned about your use of the word “now”, because it implies that things were different. So, even if we were to buy your assessment of the human condition, we’d still be stuck with explaining how anything was different at any other point in time.

So, I guess the question is – Is this question claiming that something has changed? And if so, what specifically?

I say just worry about your corner of it and make it what you want. Associate with people with like values and do what you think is important.

@Mp123 Perhaps you can be choosier about your friends and acquaintances and what you talk about. it is not something you can fix overnight, it takes time, but gradually you can go places and be active in things that consist of people who reflect your values.

If someone you know is fixated on the latest fashion or electronic doodad, consider that it doesn’t mean anything to you. And if they ask you why, ask them, “how would owning that make me a better person?”

A lot of it was planned. Watch the story of stuff

I don’t think “everything now is all about material” possessions (sic). I think many people are interested in simple living, living green, climate change, and other people.

Stop generalizing.

For the pursuit of material things, it is because we are bombarded by the cults of celebrity (shown on yachts, in Cannes, wearing designer clothes) and wealth in all of the media messages that hit us.

You just have to focus on satisfaction in your own life (with your work, with your friends, with your relationships).

It’s been like this for nearly a hundred years and nearly always goes along with technology development. I think it started in the boom years of the 1920s, again in the 50s, then the 80s. It goes in cycles and will repeat itself as new technologies arise to make the world more affluent again.

@Mp123 , I didn’t say ALL of it was planned. Did you watch the video?

The world is coming to it’s 4.54 billionth birthday. Compared to that span of time all the shit that we consider so important doesn’t really amount to doodley squat.

Depends on who wins the struggle.

@Judi

When clicking on the link you gave, I fully expected to hear the dulcet tones of George Carlin and his hilarious comments on “stuff”.

For some reason I can’t seem to be able to post a link from iPhone but anybody interested can go to YouTube and put his name in along with the word stuff. Really funny stuff :)

Maybe somebody else can post the link (slightly NSFW for language but really worth it).

Really miss that guy.

Things of this age is accomplished through cycles….
The cycle of days, weeks month seasons, years.
Just the same there are cycles of ages.

People born and die without prior consent.this leads some to assume
that there is no purpose to it.

The reality is, that the purpose is still beyond any who have not understood it but yet still they cannot operate outside of it.

So as you look around, what you see are all working together seamlessly to accomplish the closing of this age.
Those in the dark will remain in the dark still and those in the light will remain in the light.

I went to a lecture once where the lecturer said that now is the first time in human history where the human brain does not develop. Up until now the human brain has always been developing, but now it has stopped. Why? Because the human brain can no longer keep up with technology.

I think that is serious business and it does make me a little worried. We must not forget that we are merely human beings. I think we have to keep an eye on the development taking place. We are busy building enormously tall towers, incredibly complicated computers and what not. I think it’s important to remember Mother Earth and the human beings on her.

We’ve made it to Friday!

Now I’m hoping for an entire weekend before Monday. Keep your fingers crossed!

@tups, I am not sure what you mean by human brain not developing. IQ scores have been rising uniformly, most likely because of our facility with new technology. I am not saying that we are not pawns of corporations, but you will not find evidence for it in our overall intelligence.

tups's avatar

@LostInParadise It was a neurologist and brain researcher who said so. I don’t have any links, but he said it was scientifically proven that the brain itself had stopped developing. IQ is another matter.

@tups and @LostInParadise – Here’s a brief comment from Matt Ridley on the topic.

Greed is nothing new. But bankers have tools that are a million times more powerful, than everything that was available in the past. If we don’t stop them, they will screw us.
