Any other gentlemen out there losing hair on their legs?

Asked by _Whitetigress (4378points) August 9th, 2013

First my left leg above my knee on the thigh started going bald, now the right leg has fully caught up. The patch of hair loss is right above the knees.

Such a strange phenomenon!

The outside of my lower legs from the calf to the ankle is strangely hairless and has happened in the last 5 years or so. It’s right down the middle on the front and back and I’m pretty hairy both above and on the inside of both legs. I have no idea what caused it.

I thought maybe

> I rubbed my leg on something unconsciously like my chair or how I position my legs while driving, but I don’t seem to
> maybe my pants rubbed there, but not really
> Burned it, either the sun or something hot, I don’t think so and it seems like it would have come back at some point.

So I joke with my wife that it’s being harvested while I sleep by the little people. It makes me feel good to be helping someone out. Little people need little socks, little sweaters, little warm hats for their little heads.

Only the finest ankle hair will do.

My husband and his father on their calf on down. So, theirs looks like it is some sort of genetic patterned hair loss.

Are you losing any other body hair? Are you having any sexual problems like trouble staying hard or ejaculating? Do you have trouble gaining muscle even though you work out with weights? Is your beard growing in slower after a shave? If those questions apply to you, you might be low in testosterone. Maybe not low enough to do something about it, but lowish.

Or, your thyroid could be off if you are losing hair in ther places including your head. Another possibility is many beleve low iron causes hair loss, iron dificiency is more rare for men than women.

Have you been wearing tight slacks, maybe bending down a lot on your knees?

It happened to me from wearing pants that were too tight/rubbing against my leg in places.

Pretty common in older guys (me included). Here’s why:

Testosterone is broken down by an enzyme, 5-alpha reductase, to form dihydrotestosterone (DHT). High levels of DHT shut down hair follicles.

Progesterone acts as an inhibitor of 5-alpha reductase, but older men experience a reduction in progesterone levels. This in turn cause increased 5-alpha reductase activity, which causes in increase in DHT, which shuts down follicles.

And the converse happens in women which is why we start growing hair in places it oughten’t to be.

@janbb ?? Yes, we get chin whiskers, but I haven’t had to shave my legs in ages, which is lovely.

The leg hair loss in some men could be explained by poor blood circulation due to inactivity/physical exercise, being overly fat and of course diabetes.

I’m a 62 male and I haven’t been paying attention of my leg hair at all but I likely have less now then when I was in my 20’s. Yet I still have plenty of it.

Personally I think the crop circles that develop, practically overnight, on older mens pates are the most fascinating.
When my ex husband and I were divorcing I was on the balcony of our master bedroom looking down upon his head, one afternoon when he dropped by and the aerial view was shocking!
I had never seen how big his crop circle really was, being 5’3.5 and he being 6 ft.
I just had to toss a few pebbles at the target.

He was not amused. lol
