Is the word racist, as capriciously applied to white people, a slur?

Asked by josie (30934points) August 12th, 2013

My son’s girlfriend is/was Hispanic. And illegal, maybe relevant maybe not.

In my presence, she called him a racist because he voted for Romney.
He is 21. Naïve to be sure. But, the accusation upset him.
I told him that it should indeed upset him. I told him it was slur since there was no evidence it was true, other than he voted for somebody she did not like.
He dumped her.
I thought it was a good move. I think it is indeed a slur.

Or not?

I wonder if the Hispanic folk who voted for Romney are also racist.

Very few people know what the word actually means. Most of the time the word racist is used incorrectly.

Slur? No. You are stupid ass cracker is a slur.

It is ignorance, not a slur.

According to the definition of the word…

An insinuation or allegation about someone that is likely to insult them or damage their reputation.

…her comment could be considered a slur. She said he’s racist; he was insulted.

I think it’s a petty thing to break up over, either way.

I think it could be considered a slur in that context. She was possibly being lazy in my opinion and name calling. I wasn’t there for the whole conversation so I can’t know the whole context. I can’t imagine saying to someone I am dating or a friend or my spouse they are racist, but I have said that what they have said is racist or sounds racists if I think that. I think there is a difference.

@josie Wouldn’t calling anyone a racist capriciously be a slur? I’m sorry, but it seems somewhat indicative of bias to single out only whites. Yes, I know we get slammed wrongly more than our share right now. But we won’t eliminate the injustice and hate that slavery, Jim Crow and Apartheid created by perpetuating “us against them” ideation.

Yes, @josie, white people have it so tough. We’re so sorry for all of you.

@bob_ You joke, but Manifest Destiny, Noblesse Oblige and the White Plight are no walk in the park, let me tell you!

A slur? Maybe. Sounds more like ignorance to me.

I was called a “white devil” once. It didn’t even bother me. Sometimes you just have to let it roll off your back.

I had a guy tell me once that I was a “fine ass white woman”. I just laughed and said thank you. My husband at the time wanted to kill the guy. So stupid. I was so embarrassed by the way he acted. I took it as a compliment. My ex took it as a threat and proceeded to drop the “N” word in the middle of Detroit. He was/is a racist with a capital R. He went off on my sister once because she said Will Smith is hot.

My opinion? People get offended way too easily these days.

@josie Lots of questions about race and how unfairly us poor white folks are treated. Perhaps you should read this the watch the full movie.
