Do you believe in witchcraft?

Asked by spiritual (1271points) August 12th, 2013

I was just watching a programme in which witchcraft features, and wondered about what people thought? Do spells and the occult work or are they a human invention imagining the ability to control the uncontrollable?

Yes, but I’m afraid to admit it. I’m still waiting to be forgiven. From my transgressions 12 years ago.

Yes, except for the part where I don’t.

no holy ghosts, no love potions, and no bigfoot. am i the only one that finds the regular world fucking astounding enough?

Of course not.

Pretty much this. Though people who have dabbled in it may say otherwise. As far as I’m concerned, there’s only one way to find out ;)

Yes. I performed a ritual yesterday
and it worked

Are you talking about Wicca? I believe that plenty of people practice it.

Do I believe in some sort of magical powers? No.

@syz Yes wicca, casting spells, ouji boards. I know people practice it, but are they wasting their time?

For the few Wiccans that I have known, that’s not what Wicca is about. But I’m sure some go into it looking for some kind of magic. It’s just another type of religion for people who are searching for something. Frankly, I don’t see a whole lot of difference between Wicca rituals and Catholic rituals, for example (ritualistically drinking the blood of Christ and eating the body of Christ? Yeck). I’m not dissing Catholicism, mind you, but pretty much all organized religion. One makes about as much sense as another.

Certainly voodoo works. I have no doubt evil magic exists. The Bible even speaks of it.

CWOTUS's avatar

Well, I don’t, but apparently some do.

I do not ” believe in ” things but I am convinced by the evidence.

There is no real evidence for witchcraft.

Well not the magic part, no, but I always thought that “classical witches” probably had herbal remedies and other medical accoutrements that were at least somewhat effective in the days they used them. I know a lot of them were believed to serve as midwives and doctors in ancient Europe. They may have attributed their medicines effects to “magical” origins but only because they didnt understand the chemistry behind them was all. There was a time when “old women” in ancient Europe served as spiritual leaders of a sort too. We know that in Norse Myth the AEsir (patriarchal/Odin led) Gods had a war for supremacy against the Vanir (matriarchal/ Freya led) Gods. This was likely a cultural reflection of the more male dominant clans migrating from Scandinavia into Europe and superseding the Celtic peoples and their beliefs as well as merging with them. The Celts didnt leave written history though, and so much of that is conjecture, sadly.

Witchcraft is basically non-Christian prayer. In that, @syz is pretty much correct. I have attended many a Wiccan service and when you get right down to it, they really are no different than anything done in a Christian church; rituals, appeals to higher powers, etcetera.

The spells fall into two basic categories;

1) Those that fulfill the same role as rituals in other religions, such as funeral rites to ease a spirit’s passage into the afterlife, and;

2) Pure bunk, like making that hot boy in homeroom fall madly in love with you.

Are they wasting their time? Well, the ones casting “pure bunk” spells are, but the others are not wasting their time any more than those who pray to Jesus or Allah.

Absolutely. It doesn’t work though

No. Anyone who does is a fool.

I believe that by tapping into instinctual energies all around us the wiccans and other animists
throw some great parties.

I have a hard time saying something like witchcraft is impossible, therefore, I say maybe.

Miss_J_Jett's avatar

I say yes, but only in theory. Let me explain. See, witchcraft is a tricky thing, although terro card readings (pardon me if I misspelled that, I don’t use the word often.), and fortune telling come across as “witchcraft” that doesn’t necessarily mean it exists. Now, the believe in the human mind that, say, anything is possible, is stronger than any type of so called “magic” simply because the brain can produce most anything, out of thin air. Now, this may seem crazy, and you may be feeling at this point like “what is this girl talking about, and why do I bother reading this?” Simply because of the curiousity, my sweets. Curiousity is one if the most obnoxious things that you’re ever going to experience in your life, however, curiosity, is what binds us as humans. I believe in anything is possible, because, whatever created us, could’ve created anything. I’ve proof that anything is, although, I can’t mention names, werewolves, vampires, witches, and ghouls and goblins even exist. Its simply a matter of what you choose to see.
