Why do people think furries are weird?

Asked by Dendro (4points) August 15th, 2013

It’s mostly just harmless escapism, and it’s fun to imagine yourself as something other than what you are. Also, furries are fun to draw. It’s just an interesting subculture.

Does the term automatically come with sexual subtext, or is that a subset of the furry community? Because if so there is your answer right there, wanting to boink an animal is, to me, unnatural and weird, less so when you mean a costume but still weird. Sorry, that’s how i feel, I’m weird in my own ways, just not that one.

Welcome to Fluther.

We think everyone is weird. Really, welcome.

It’s probably the whole being-fucked-by-an-animal-and/or-fucking-an-animal thing.

What’s a furry? Are we talking fursonas or am I just way off?

Imadethisupwithnoforethought's avatar

I think furries are weird. Sincerely.

1) I mostly imagine kissing or oral sex and all the hair in my mouth.
2) Sex seems really weird and exhausting to dress for. (Unless you are a female dating me, you should then put on stockings and garters, under either a librarian/schoolteacher outfit or a cheerleader costume).

There is a difference between weird and harmless. Do I think it is harmless? Absolutely. Don’t expect me to say this is widespread behavior. But it doesn’t bother me unless I am involved.

I think there is a distinction between having an avatar character that is presented as an anthro and getting off on the idea of believing you are an animal while having sex (to the point of dressing as said animal while having sex.) The former is no different, to me, as artistic escapism where you play a game and the main character is an animal, such as Sonic. The latter, however, is fetishistic and off-putting.

As long as it stays as erotic escapism and doesn’t transmute into, you know, trying to rape someone’s pet, then whatever. But I wouldn’t expect someone from the community to demand my understanding.

Of course furries are weird. So are Trekkies. And everyone else, too. We all have our quirks, some of our quirks are just more visual and tactile than others.

Personally, I adore every furry I’ve ever met.

Some of my best friends are furries… I think. (What’s a furry?)

I think this question needs a definitive definition of what a furry is, if it doesn’t involve sex then I don’t even really think it’s weird, at least no more weird than cosplay or bicycle shorts.

dxs's avatar

Urban dictionary is not doing a good job at defining a furry. I’m gonna need some help here.

Yiff you don’t know why, I don’t think I can help :P

But one can think furries are weird without thinking they’re a disgusting abomination.

And here we have it:

“Sexual attraction to furry characters is a polarized issue within the fandom; in one survey with 4300 furry respondents, 37% answered that sexual attraction is important in their furry activities, 38% were ambivalent, and 24% answered that it has little or nothing to do with their furry activities. In a different online survey, 33% of furry respondents answered that they have a “significant sexual interest in furry”, another 46% stated they have a “minor sexual interest in furry”, and the remaining 21% stated they have a “non-sexual interest in furry”. The survey specifically avoided adult-oriented websites to prevent bias.”

Those are the numbers people. I’m back to thinking that if one in three furries is all about the sex then that’s why I find them weird. Even knowing that a significant portion of them aren’t interested in furry sex at all.

I’m way too into this question, I should have just ignored it, now I’m the weird guy who keeps talking about furry sex

Maybe it’s how the Easter Bunny is weird sitting in the middle of a mall

Did you think it was mainstream or a part of general culture lol?

Aren’t we all entitled to be mind numbingly weird really? I mean personally I’ve never got into the whole furry scene but who knows maybe I would love it. I say stick with what makes you happy weird or not. You aren’t weird :D I’m weird. Trust me.

Seek's avatar

I don’t see how it’s any more weird than having a significant sexual interest in pain, or humiliation, or feet, or anything else that involved two or more consenting adults causing harm to no one that isn’t in on the safe word.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

Because they are weird. Dressing up as a teddy bear and boinking someone who’s dressed up as a squirrel is just friggin’ weird.

rojo's avatar

^^^ Not to mention what a pain that big hairy tail has to be!

And, teddy bears can be sooo picky: “This hole two small! This hole is too big! This hole is juuuuuuuuuuust right!”.

@WillWorkForChocolate and they think furries are weird! This thread will show ‘em

I embrace my weirdness, just not in an animal costume. ;)

That’s definitely what I was thinking of. I knew at least two people in high school who had fursonas. Their characters were incredibly specific, down to the number of stripes on their fuzzy ears. Does anyone remember the scene in the movie “The Shining” where Wendy walks into a room to see two “furries” getting at it? After seeing that, it made me think the whole idea is creepy, but different strokes for different folks.

I can’t wrap my head around it, but to each his own.

Being a Furry, I can see why people may think we are weird. But a lot of the things you hear about us are completly false. There is always someone who thinks there culture is fine and then looks at another just to see it as weird. But I promise if you do your research, Furries are just NORMAL PEOPLE. We just like to imagine ourselfs as a character we could otherwise not be. Not all furries wear fursuits either. Its actually mostly a culture for the art of anthropamorphic animals, or animals that stand on two legs and act like a human would. I hope this helps people understand us a little more, and Im sorry if you think we are weird. But please please do your research on sub cultures before deciding if you think its weird or not.
