Can someone explain in a simple way how to tether an iPhone to my Mac?

Asked by xxporkxsodaxx (1396points) June 20th, 2008

I have found two or three sites on the Internet on how to do it, but the problem is, I am not so great with following them. Can someone do it for me and then give me simpler instructions? I know this is a lot to ask for, but it’s worth a shot.

Oh yes I should explain that by tethering I mean by taking the EDGE networking and then tethering it to my Mac so I can use my Mac where ever I please.

WOW, who knew this was even possible?!
The instructions at http://cre.ations.net do look doable but involves jailbreaking the iPhone as well as lots of detailed settings. I’d try to help, but don’t want to jailbreak my unit just before selling it July 11.

does your mac have bluetooth? the iPhone has bluetooth, all you have to do is set it up for wireless routing.
easy as that.

Just make sure you have an unlimited plan, otherwise it will by no means be cheap to do that much!

@upward, you know you can get a whole lot more money for an unlocked, jailbroken iPhone than a for a regular one.

@XCNuse Do you have a procedure for that? I haven’t been able to find a Bluetooth service to make that work. Is this a jailbroken thing?

I don’t know how to do it with a mac, i can’t get on my sisters’ imac right now, but with Vista all you do is set your phone to be connected via bluetooth to your computer and when you go to airport choose bluetooth dial up if you have the option, I’m not 100% positive it is possible with macs, but I know it is with windows systems, has been for a long time now so I’m pretty darn sure that macs would have it somewhere.

Edit okay i found it, just click on airport, network preferences (bottom of the list), and a window will pop up and you will have the option to choose bluetooth and turn it on. I don’t know about setting it up or anything, I’ve never done that before and don’t plan on it for a while either since I never have needed to, but it seems straightforward once you find it.
